Other than Sheridan’s portrayal in this movie, it didn’t seem to have that much of a B5 flavor to it. Shari Belafonte had more screen time than most of the regulars. I understand this was a chance for jms to stretch his genre muscles.
I enjoy this as a science fiction fan, but not so much as a B5 fan. The highlights for me were the elevator scene with Zack and Lyta, as well as getting to see “Nuke ‘em” Sheridan one more time. I can’t quite put my finger on what isn’t right with this movie, for all I know this might have been a potential IPX spin off attempt.
The DVD of Thirdspace is worth the price of admission just for the commentary track; especially some of the cracks coming from Boxleitner and Tallman.
I first watched this on my first run through the series. (I was trying to fit it in with whatever the timeline was supposed to be.) I didn’t understand it much then. I watched it again in preparation for this podcast and still didn’t understand it. Glad to know it was just because it didn’t make a whole lot of sense, and not because I’m just dumb!
Thank you also for mentioning that ‘A Call to Arms’ was (kind of) the Pilot for Crusade. I started watching a few Crusade eps online and it was so confusing as to the order. Not only that, but some of the episodes I found had the wrong titles on a few of the episodes, making things even more confusing!
Watching ‘A Call to Arms’ made what I’ve seen of Crusade so far make a whole lot more sense.
Maybe JMS just tried to fit too much into a made-for-tv movie. If this happened to be a real movie, with serious money to back up the special effects, I don’t think it would have been nearly so awful. It seemed that they really trimmed corners, used uncharacteristic info dumps, and fudged the lines much more than they did during the series. Character development was predictable and pretty sad, too.
One more thing – I really thought Christopher Franke seemed to be really hit or miss in the last season of production. Am I the only one who thought that he musically mailed it in on this movie? Maybe this movie wouldn’t have been so slloooww if the non-battle music wasn’t so, how to shall I put this, “made for tv – after school special” ?
For some reason I cant download the last three episodes. The horror!
Thought that the main reason JMS put it in the middle of the Earth Civil war at the time he did, was that there was a fleet assembling to both protect B5 and to move on Earth. That at any other time, what with outer-universe aliens invading and all, there wouldn’t have been much in place to slow them down much less stop them.
I’m half-way through listening to this podcast, and it’s already better than Thirdspace. Tim is wrong on this; it’s really worse than Day of the Dead! Now back to the podcast.
Just finished the podcast, and it was great. I noticed that, as of now, Episode 195 is rated 2.5 stars. I think this is supposed to be a rating for the podcast episode and not the Babylon 5 episode. I’m giving it 5 stars. All of the weeping given to Sleeping In Light could be dropped on Thirdspace for a completely different reason. Bret may be the newest cast member but he sure does add his share. Great coverage of a shaky B5 movie.
ya know… I’d wondered why some of the podcasts were getting such low ratings. Here I’d been thinking that folks were giving us low ratings because they hated our discussions!

Ok then. Im one of those who actually like Thirdspace…
I like it because its Lovecraft feel. And yes, it is kind of Lovecraftian if you exclude the big battle at the end. Strang big artefact, darkeness between the stars and all that. The Elder Gods? Well, thats the Vorlons so they are there allright. And why being dissepointed at the monsters? They arent Cuthulu, but you couldent realy expect him to turn up on the first date do you. No the monsters are probably more of the parasite, Starspawn kind. Small, naughty things that hang on to interdimentional travellers and the sort.
To make it short. Apart from In the beginning this, to me, is by far the best B5 movie.

I was having troubles as well for a time. I would just get 480 bytes or so of nothing. It all worked a week or so ago when I tried again.
