Last week, our heroes risked breaching the fabric of the space-time continuum by trying to follow alternate Babylon 5 storylines to parallel universes where they might have been fully played out...

Discussion: Tim, Summer and John from Jersey continue the discussion about alternate story possibilities within the original 5-year arc. We're not sure where Bret ran off to... hopefully, he didn't run afoul of emopaths and spaced himself out of self-preservation.

Submitting your own Feedback: If you have any suggestions or comments, please let us know! Call 206-338-2259, or just email us a comment you've recorded yourself!

Lurker's Guide 2.0: Summer is starting a push to get Lurker's Guide 2.0 completed and finished, including missing collectibles, photos of magazine covers and toys, and all sorts of other B5 goodies that didn't get included in the original guide during the years after Crusade. Let her know if you want to lend a hand.

More Parody/Filk Songs Wanted: If you know of any more B5-related fan songs out there, definitely let us know, so we can let other B5 fans know where to buy them! And if those CDs are out of print, let's brainstorm on ways to get those songs back out there for fans!

Summer's down for the count, but Tim and Bret soldier on! Tim also restrains himself from mauling Bret for even bringing up the myth that mankind has not landed on the Moon.

But yeah, it'd be real nice if we started landing on other planets and moons again.

Discussion: This episode is all about the justice, law, and the legal system as portrayed on Babylon 5, and how much it did or didn't influence the story as a whole.

The guys discuss, amongst other things:
* legal entanglements involving telepaths and PsiCorps
* whether or not petty street crimes exist in Minbari society
* that the conundrum of what's legal to one race and isn't to another wasn't addressed
* how hard it would be to develop a Universal Code of Justice amongst diverse worlds
* what became of the justice system on B5 after they broke away from Earth Alliance
* whether Sheridan was a criminal and a terrorist, or a hero and a freedom fighter

Feedback: Kurt in St George brings up what he thinks was a missed opportunity with Lyta in Season 5; Rapid Eye surmises how insects might have been wrangled on the set; Roger wonders where Delenn got the authority to break the Grey Council and why they abided with her declaration; Hated Bunny comments on the statue of the Centauri goddess Li having tentacles... (HB, the goddess and the average Centauri female are differently endowed, remember?)

		<itunes:summary>Welcome to Show #206!

Tim, Summer and Bret (and the entire B5 fandom) are glad to hear that Jerry Doyle is doing better and recovering well, and can't help but wonder how similar the situation sounded to Garibaldi's experience with PsiCorp's "treatment" facility.

We also discuss the lingering Hollywood accounting shenanigans, and how after all these years, Babylon 5 is still considered by Warner Bros to still be $80 million in the hole after $100 million in costs for all 5 seasons, even though they reported $1 billion in DVD sales and other earnings.

Inquiring fans want to see the mathematical proofs, and to get those equations vetted by top mathematics and economics professionals. And where are the bulldog representatives for the creative talent in Hollywood? A-List actors and directors aren't the only ones who are due fair compensation for their work... writers, producers and crew work just as hard, if not harder (Summer's a writer and producer... can you tell this is a hot button for her?)

Discussion: This episode is all about the surprises we experienced while watching Babylon 5, both the very first time, and the subtle new things discovered on subsequent viewings.

Emails: Seems the Triluminary discussion from Show #204 struck up a rather deep analysis and dialogue!

John in Jersey puts forth his theory on what exactly the Triluminary was really reacting to (was it reacting to Minari souls in humans, or human DNA in Minbari?); Jim Stiles thinks the Triluminary was scanning for junk DNA markers common to both Minbari and humans; James agrees with Bret that the soul transfer argument was religious caste hand-waving, and there's a genetic component that it's reacting to.

Summer posits that maybe Valen wasn't a human fully transformed into a Minbari, but was a human-Minbari hybrid just like Delenn transformed into. Having them both be hybrids answers some of the questions recently brought up by our insatiable curiosity. Thoughts?

Ernestine from New Jersey comments on the theory that Morden would be an excellent lover, but has concerns about his ever-present hidden surveillance, and she also comments on the Days of Our Lives-B5 crossover data points.

Listener Feedback: Rod from Nashville appreciated our episode discussing religion, and thinks that B5's handling of religion and spirituality paved the way for more recent shows to explore those themes, including the recent BSG incarnation; Arkle feels left out because not as many of his comments have been played as Gary's (and Tim's the one you need to bribe!), and he'd like to hear us discuss elements in B5 that had initially showed up in prior JMS projects; Gary explains why he doesn't enjoy "River of Souls" as much as other stories in the realm;

Adrian in KY is a new podcast listener, and he gives us his interpretation on the retcon factors in "In the Beginning" (he doesn't think it's as big a deal as we did); Father Beast gives us his interpretation of The Babylon Podcast's "Sleeping in Light" moment; Father Beast also weighs in on the Religion in B5 episode and the materialistic philosophy of the Soul Hunters; Mike in Detroit finally listened to Show #200... and is now recovering from the traumatic flashback to his teen years; Mike in Detroit explains why "Parliament of Dreams" is one of his favorite episodes; and Edmund gives us is Babe-ylon 5 checklist

Emails: George Moore corrects Tim's recounting of the pendulum scene from Contact; Lurker Steve in MN has a theory that the Minbari religious beliefs may be the result of Vorlon tampering, and wonders if anyone else also thinks that this might be a possibility; Colin in San Marcos would like to hear us talk about the unfulfilled premises and promises from Babylon 5's early directions, to fill in some of the blanks for folks who were not able to obtain the scriptbooks.

Since the Draco Vista Studios are still undergoing moving and renovations, Summer's recording this episode from her secret lair. Gary from Jacksonville also joins in the fun, starting off by recounting his currently unsuccessful search for his own copy of the book "Parliament of Dreams: Conferring on Babylon 5".

From the premise and purpose of the Soul Hunters, to the clashes between science and faith, to the waning old faiths contrasted with the rise of new ones, there are no simple answers, which is why we keep debating the questions.

Voicemails: Gary comments on Gary; Gary comments on Gary and Edmund; John in Atlanta has been a very good minion despite the fact that Summer frightened him, and John in Oregon submits a theory that the main reason why Lochley would be implicitly trusted by Sheridan by having them have been married was a story-telling gimmick to create a relationship "shortcut"

At a recent Orange County Screenwriters event, JMS stated that both he and WB are interested in doing a 20th anniversary story for 2013... so let the feeding frenzy begin.

Tim gripes yet again about the lack of forward motion on the Lensman project, and Summer would sign an NDA in blood if it'd get her a copy of the B5 shooting script once production starts, and starts the ball rolling on trying to come up with an Earth Alliance ship name to be used in the movie.

Deep Geeking: Tim and Summer discuss the TNT Movie "River of Souls". They talk about the pacing of the story, watching the character quirks slide seamlessly back into place, and humanity's ever-present search for immortality and the unwise choices it seems to lead us to doing.

Listener Emails: Michael Johnston daydreams that we had some advertisements from Adobe; puts forth his theories on the "magic chalk" that Tim has so many problems with, and some alternate pairings; Gary Henderson throws out theories on who Dr Franklin might have seen had he been part of the Day of the Dead; Frank believes that Morden was subsconsciously called in by Lennier's repressed feelings and self-denial; Kevin gives us his "B5 viewing while ill" story, and he didn't watch a B5 marathon, but instead listened to about 50 episodes of this podcast; Frank in Baltimore lets us know that the writing on the artifact in "Thirdspace" was just basic advertising.

Girl Talk: Summer, Laura and Sandy go into deep detail about which men they'd go for and why, which features or traits attract our attentions and desires, and which ones turn us off fast.

And the discussion's not limited to the human men... some of the aliens are given serious consideration, and Bret weighs in on a number of characters he could seriously consider entertaining.

And we just can't stop thinking about the possibilities when you've got six.

Voicemails: Summer, Edmund and Gary tackle the bulk of the remaining messages in the voicemail queue, and the fabric of our universe shudders.

Gary wonders if there might have been an IPX spinoff series based on how much "Thirdspace" focused on the IPX side of the story; Roger weighs in on "A Call to Arms" being a back-door pilot and wonders if "Legend of the Rangers" falls into that same category; Roger chastises Summer for saying that "All Along the Watchtower" was Hendrix' rather than Dylan's creation; Gary posits that Lyta had subsconscious knowledge of the machine that might have helped make sense of why she sent all the maintbots careening into it; Mike in Detroit comments on the "Day of the Dead" Smackdown and why Lennier/Morden was a good matchup;

Neil from Bowie talks about how JMS kept his "Sleeping in Light" cameo under wraps; Arkle wants to know if there have been any FarPoint Media shows that have never fallen into the Gilligan's Island trap; Will in Miami implores us to keep the podcast alive long after we've run out of B5 episodes to talk about; Gary weighs in on the deus ex machina plotonium effect of the Thirdspace device.

Summer also asks for help in getting Lurker's Guide 2.0 completed and finished, including missing collectibles, photos of magazine covers and toys, and all sorts of other B5 goodies that didn't get included in the original guide during the years after Crusade.

		<itunes:summary>Welcome to Show #198!

Tim mentions that the Solar Observer is up and sending back data, so go check out the NASA website for cool images.

And Happy Mother's Day from the Vorlon and all of us!

Since we are an equal opportunity platform for B5 Geeking, we are planning an all-girls "Men of Babylon 5" (from here on out to be called the B5 Beefcake episode). Well, Bret may join in, too, because he's got an equal opportunity pleasure threshold.

Voicemails: Tim, Summer, Jeffrey and Bret lend their expertise and their podcast-juice filled opinions to the many voicemails that have been waiting for us.

John from Jersey believes that "Sleeping in Light" does rank as one of the best series finales of all time; Neil from Bowie lets us know where Kosh's last name, his mate's name and Ulkesh's last name were likely to have been first mentioned (which leads to a heated debate on which sources should be canon and which ones should not); Neil from Bowie wants to know if we have a definitive answer on whether or not we're going to cover any of JMS' other works when we're done covering Babylon 5 (while Summer would love to chat about Jeremiah for a few dozen episodes, we think Mike might have an aneurism if we went down that road);

Edmund lists his "B5 Babe" preferences, and Summer teases the upcoming B5 Beefcake episode; Neil from Bowie comments on how rich the B5 universe beyond the boundaries of the actual series; Father Beast wants some more info on the statement about the original series finale having been slated to be "War Without End", and Tim explains the initial early series design; Jim Stiles questions the comparison of Sheridan fitting into the Christ-Messiah imagery (leading to more tangential debate);

a question about needing to read the novelization of "In the Beginning" and see the movie to get the whole picture; Gary brings up a point from "In the Beginning" that wasn't in the movie but was in the book; Edmund adds his opinions on the unspoken tensions between Garibaldi and Sheridan in "Sleeping in Light"; Gary says how finally seeing the Battle of the Line in "In the Beginning" finally made the "we won but we didn't" mentality surrounding the Earth-Minbari War; John from Jersey weighs in on the "least favorite" things from B5; Paul from Las Vegas weighs in on the issue of Sheridan and Lochley having been married

More Parody/Filk Songs Wanted: If you know of any more B5-related fan songs out there, definitely let us know, so we can let other B5 fans know where to buy them! And if those CDs are out of print, let's brainstorm on ways to get those songs back out there for fans!

Deep Geeking: Tim, Summer and Bret weigh in on "Thirdspace", the good the bad and the ugly of the movie. One of the TNT projects, it was much anticipated, but contained a few more warts than the die-hard B5 fans had become accustomed to over the previous seasons.

How deep was the suspense, and was the payoff equal to the build? How apparent were the Lovecraftian undertones, if you weren't aware that's where the influence came from?

Smackdowns: What will we argue about more in the near future: "Day of the Dead" science, or the reasons given for why the station was blown up?

Voicemail: Jason from Murfreesboro wonders if Franklin had taken into account the use of hired telepaths to pluck the passcodes from Franklin's mind when they wanted to grab his medical research; Neil from Bowie recounts his enjoyment of the Jerry Doyle interview; John from Jersey weighs in on "Sleeping in Light", and his recollections of watching it the first time; Neil from Bowie comments on interpretations of Lady Morella's prophecies; Neil from Bowie jokes about the short-lived TV series "Touched by a Vorlon"

Parody/Filk Songs Wanted: If you know of any B5-related fan songs out there, definitely let us know, so we can let other B5 fans know where to buy them! If the CDs are out of print, let's brainstorm on ways to get those songs back out there for fans!

Podcasting plus Copious Amounts of Alcohol = Potential Trainwreck. Adjust Expectations Accordingly!

Rumors are confirmed that JMS will be making a cameo appearance in the upcoming Thor feature film, in addition to him writing for both the "Wonder Woman" and "Superman" comics.

Alas, because of all of these other projects, Tim is feeling abandoned because of the lack of forward progress on the Lensman feature film project.

Summer will definitely have to re-read the Chronologies for more info on the details on the construction process of stations 1-4 to determine whether or not that would have been a worthwhile story addition to see on screen.

Make a list... we're definitely going to continue this show sometime in the future!

What will we argue about more in the near future: "Day of the Dead" science, or the reasons given for why the station was blown up?

Links to more B5 parody song artists mentioned by Doug in Bremerton:
-- Maya Bohnhoff
-- Echo's Children: a Seattle-based duo, their final CD came out in 2004, and some of them are no longer available.
-- The Duras Sisters: a Phoenix-based filk group that no longer sings or performs together, and the website says their CDs are still available for sale, but those sites don't exist anymore.

Many of these songs/CDs aren't available, Doug... throw us a bone! Are you aware of any links where the tracks can be purchased? Google was not helpful in this leg of the quest...

We also say farewell to Andrew Koenig, son of Walter Koenig, and our hearts and thoughts are with Walter and his family.

Visit GoToMeeting.com/techpodcasts for a FREE 30 day trial!!

Deep Geeking: Tim, Summer, Bret, Jeffrey, and Chuck discuss "In the Beginning", the first of the Babylon 5 TV movies, and how it functions as a vehicle to introduce the series to a brand new audience coming in via TNT, and to the existing fans who may not have been able to see all of the previous four seasons due to inconsistencies in syndicated broadcast times.

Summer also tosses out the theory that some of the retconned information might have been made up by Londo to fill in the blanks in the story he was telling, and idea that hit upon her while we were chatting.

How do you feel about some of the retcons that were introduced in this movie? Do they bother you, or are they understandable given the need to incorporate the existing cast members in slightly different situations? Do the characters not remembering or acknowledging meeting each other concern you more or less than altering the details of Sheridan's destruction of The Black Star?

Feedback Wanted: Don't forget to let us know if you want to submit your formal theories about "Day of the Dead", pro or con, for a final theoretical debate on what really happened in that episode.

Submitting your own Feedback: If you have any suggestions or comments, please let us know! Call 206-338-2259, or just email us a comment you've recorded yourself!

Live Video Stream: Yes, the technology has progressed to the point where we can now play video voicemails into the video live stream. Check out the video stream of our live feed at Ustream.

Second Life Info: FarPoint Media's Second Life space can be found on the Third Life Books island in the Wind River Territory. Find the island here: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Wind%20River%20Territory/50/129/22

Deep Geeking: Tim, Summer, Jeffrey, and Bret embark on the emotional journey that is "Sleeping In Light".

Even after 12 years, the emotional impact of Sheridan realizing that his time is up, and that he has to say goodbye to Delenn still stings us.

We talk about the character changes that we have to imagine happened during the interim 18 years, the evolution of the friendships that might have occurred over time and over the separation of everyone across the galaxy.

Summer disagrees with Tim and Bret about the reasons behind the uncertainty over whether or not Garibaldi would have made the trip to that final dinner. If that had still been an issue, would they have worked that closely together five years after the end of "Objects at Rest" to create the Excalibur class explorer ships we have in "A Call to Arms"?

The gang also discusses how "Sleeping in Light" stacks up as a series finale compared to other series finales in years and shows gone by, the spots in the episode where the tears will always fall, and the impact the music had.

Share the B5 Love: If you have any friends who enjoyed watching Babylon 5, don't assume they already know about this podcast... Tell them, and ask them to tell their friends who are B5 fans. Spread the word about the fun we're having here!

Interview: The Jason Davis, Senior Editor at Synthetic Worlds Publishing, chats with Tim, Summer, and Bret about Crusade: Behind the Scenes, which is available for purchase right now at Babylon 5 Books.

Jason talks to us about all the things he learned while compiling these interviews, and that this book came about to not only release some never-before-seen interviews, but to also assuage the yearnings of eager B5 fans who are craving the Crusade script books.

He also gives us a tease about what to expect from the upcoming Crusade script books, Crusade: What the Hell Happened?, and promises that those are coming "soon".

Feedback: Al sends in an email asking what episode order we'll be using to cover Crusade, and ya know, we haven't decided that yet! The TNT broadcast order is the order of the US DVD set, and the various episode orders can be found on the Crusade Wikipedia page.

Mike Tuck wonders how much certain elements from The Last Starfighter might have inspired or influenced JMS while he was creating the Babylon 5 universe... and we learn that Tim has never watched The Last Starfighter, so we really need to sit him down with a DVD and make him watch it!

Tom wants to know if anyof the Babylon Podcast crew will be attending any conventions anytime soon, and honestly, other than Phoenix Comicon at the end of May, it's very unlikely; Uwe from Germany has just found the podcast and thanks us for all of the work we've done so far while he's catching up on the shows.

Voicemails: Rod in Nashville thinks we missed out on the full drama content of "Wheel of Fire"; Father B comments on Londo's sacrifice in "Fall of Centauri Prime" matching up with Lady Morella's prophecies; Edmund disagrees with Londo's acceptance of his fate with the Drakh as part of being slave to his visions; Gary posits that he can come up a never-ending stream of voicemails for us to talk about, even if we run out of B5 material to cover; Arkle says the Sheridan surprise in "Wheel of Fire" was spoiled by the episodic trailer; Colin compares Elric's prediction for Londo with the sky-holoprojection of Londo's coronoation speech;

Gary wonders what about having been influenced by Vorlons makes Sheridan immune to Lyta's attempts at mind control; Rod in Nashville says the plot flow issues from "Movements of Fire and Shadow" stem from it really needing to be "Fall", part 1; Rod has a theory about how far and wide the Drakh had planted bombs all around Centauri Prime; Gary muses on how different the Garibaldi intervention might have been if he'd been confronted by Ivanova rather than Lochley; Rod wonders about our fascination with the Drakh keeper removal scene, and doesn't think the sound was authentically "squishy" enough;

Gary draws a comparison between G'Kar's rejection of the offer of leadership, and Londo's resigned acceptance of leadership; Father B weighs in on the issue of alcoholism; Edmund adds his thoughts on the Lyta rummaging around in Garibaldi's dreams; wonders where the name "Ulkesh" came from for the replacement Vorlon; Gary is bored enough to wonder why the podcast album art depicts Tim as a Centauri and Summer as wearing the Army of Light; Colin asks for some clarification on the original story timeline based on our comments about the way "Fall" felt like an ending; Edmund shows his appreciation for the holiday specials; Father B thinks that Tim might have deeper issues with "Day of the Dead" and other leaps of spiritual faith depicted in B5 than he's letting on

Summer now wants to make a big podcast promotional push, and get the word out to Babylon 5 fans who may be Internet savvy but do not as yet know about this show... if only she could borrow JC Hutchins' Beta Clone Army for this task...

Also, our thoughts go out to Jeff Conaway and Joy Beaudine and their families, and we wish all the best for their recoveries.

Deep Geeking: Tim and Summer discuss "Wheel of Fire", somewhere in there amidst the many game show inspired puns.

While the public reveal and fallout over Garibaldi's drinking will have a farther reaching impact amongst the crew and even out to Mars than initally expected when this episode first aired, was it truly breaking ground in terms of the television portrayal of someone struggling with alcoholism beyond the stereotypes built in previous decades?

The same thing with Lise educating Garibaldi on living and life; you can't make things perfect before moving onto the next thing because otherwise you'll end up stuck in the same place for a very long time.

We chat about Lyta's growing power and growing anger, and the beginning of the fallout of her choices to take on Psi Corps head on.

We also learn about the special Tappers Guild, either within the Stuntmen's Union or as a select subgroup of the Hand Models Assocation. Who knew?

Discussion: Gary just can't let go of the fact that Tim cannot see beyond his mental blocks around "Day of the Dead", and gives us another hypothesis, to no avail; Gary wishes everyone in the FarPoint Media universe a happy holiday season and even a festive Chinese New Year; Frank in WV is enjoying the space program updates provided by Jeffrey and Tim.

Neil from Bowie also recommendsSpace Flight Now as another good source for launch info;

And speaking of the Babylon 5 board game, Summer just found an image of a B5 Monopoly board... wish there was a real B5-themed Monopoly game.

And yes, Edmund really did go 60s sitcom on us.

Deep Geeking: Tim and Summer discuss "The Fall of Centauri Prime".

Londo's journey into his solitary reign, presiding over a beaten and broken populace, is now complete. We delve deeply into motivations and consequences and we may be arguing more about Londo later.

Did Delenn do the right thing in trying to ignore Lennier's "dying" declaration -- did her actions help, or make Lennier feel worse?

Tim also calls "shenanigans" on energy-based beam weapons having a recoil significant enough to alter the trajectory of a ship that size, damaged or no.

Discussion: Michael hijacks the show and leads everyone down the gutter, and we can't even blame the scotch this time.

Gary wonders how many other times the Vorlons made use of Sebastian's talent for interrogation; Gary wonders if we are going to more deeply analyze the parallel journeys of Garibaldi and Londo during the 5 seasons; Gary recommends the new NASA iPhone app for those who have trouble using Heavens Above to find out where you can view the shuttle and the ISS.

Mike S suggests that fans looking for B5 fan films check out "Star Wreck"; George related an anecdote about Garibaldi's BFG-9000; Steve puts forth a Star Trek related theory why Tim despises "Day of the Dead".

After Jim Stiles told Summer about a parody album titled "Ramming Speed" by the band Sci-Fried and she posted about it, Jim Fredericks from the band sent in "For Whom Babylon Tolls" for us to have fun with and share with our B5 audience. We should invite Jim and the band on the show, and soon!

<itunes:summary>Welcome to Show #183... Happy New Year everyone!

Is the end of The Babylon Podcast looming near? Will the podcast be able to complete it's own 5-year arc? Are there enough B5 related things for us to talk about to get us to February 2011? Is there even a remote possibility to push it to a 6th year?

Deep Geeking: Tim and Summer discuss "Movements of Fire and Shadow".

Tim believes the episode doesn't quite pull together in as good a cohesive satisfying whole as it could have been, saving graces of the ability of various bipedal races to fart on command notwithstanding.

Does the episode suffer from having too many storylines going on at the same time? Would the story have been better served by being split into one more episode, or would the sense of urgency have been lost?

Discussion: Whoever called in the "Delenn the Ex-Minbari" Christmas parody, please call back and let us know who you are... props are well deserved!

Summer is enamored of the parodies listed on the "Ramming Speed" album by Sci-Fried, and be sure that we'll be hearing more from them soon.

Steve from Denver corrects how many Shuttle flights are left; Fred from NJ relates that there's a letter in support of Harlan Ellison written by JMS, dated July 1982, that's "An Edge of My Voice" (a collection of Harlan's LA Weekly columns from the 1980s, available from the Baen Webscriptions website); Hated Bunny wonders if the technology used by the Brakiri in "Day of the Dead" came from the technomages; Arkle doesn't think Lyta's appearance to Garibaldi was a dream, that it was her experimenting with her telepathic powers; and Mark sends an email to thank us for the hours and hours of entertainment we've given him.

Oh, and "Leave Garibaldi Alooooooone!"

Christmas Kosh is Coming to Town, Christmas Kosh is Coming to Town! 'Tis the season, and waxing nostalgic and singing holiday B5 tunes warms the... well, something.

Summer is still hopping about the lack of B5 parody holiday music, and especially the lack of Halloween alien heads. It's time we send out a call to the fans to get working on that... it's never to late to breathe new life into any SF franchise for either humor or crass commercial endeavors!

Deep Geeking: Tim and Summer discuss "And All My Dreams, Torn Asunder", including production questions that Jeffrey can lend insight to. I bet you didn't know that it took a technician to create that perfect "bed head" look, didja?

The fallout from the convergence of information gathered by Garibaldi, evidence from autopsies performed by Franklin, and the discoveries made during Lennier's investigation begins. The overwhelming preponderence of evidence has to be presented to the Alliance and the lines are drawn.

Discussion: Jeffrey gives us a rundown on the details of what an associate producer will usually do on a series, and how it differed from his role as producer's associate.

Tim in KC asks us to theorize on a "Day of the Dead" paranormal meetup regarding who G'Kar might have been visited by; Gary is thrilled by the recent Aries launch, and relays Buzz Aldrin's disappointment with the lack of real spaceflight progress; Val in NY shares her appreciation of the train wreck episodes (she may be in the minority, there).

Doug asks in an email if any B5 fans can help identify the rock song playing in the background at the end of "Midnight on the Firing Line" during the final scene with Ivanova and Talia, and Jeffrey surmises that it may well have been composed by Christopher Franke instead of an outside artist. Anyone want to do some research and compare that song to existing tracks from Tangerine Dream?

Deep Geeking: Tim, Summer and Jeffrey discuss many of the consquences and the subtexts in "Darkness Ascending".

We argue for quite a bit about the nature of Garibaldi's dream, how much was dream and how much was or wasn't influenced by Lyta's telepathic curiosity (and whether or not that itself was real or dream), and talk a bit more about Lennier and his mission, and of the telepath DNA deal between Lyta and G'Kar.

And yes, Summer really does want to know if Garibaldi's BFG-10000 survived production and is squirreled away somewhere, or if it was broken down and recycled after the episode was done.

Feedback: ...and the "Day of the Dead" theories continue! We will wear Tim down eventually, and make him one of us. We also take a trip down the voicemail rabbit hole and end up skirting the Star Trek universe along the way.

Interview: Tim, Summer and Jeffrey chat with Brad Dourif, his role as Brother Edward in "Passing Through Gethsemane", and scifi and horror in general.

Brad reminisces about his time on the show, and tells us how much of a fan he was of the show back then, and much more.

Feedback: Gary wonders too deeply about alternate delivery methods of Zoe's message from Kosh for Sheridan; Gary still thinks we tagged the WB closing theme to the end of Show #175; Gary seconds Jeffrey's recommendation that everyone should see at least one Space Shuttle launch in their lifetime; Gary wonders why Jeffrey isn't mentioned at all in "Babylon 5: A to Z".

Will Gary get his own Voicemail While Driving show? Stay tuned to find out!

Tim helps clarify recent Internet rumors about new B5 fanfic-based films being produced without JMS... JMS says "not happening".

Along with Troy Rutter, we also speculate on ways B5 fan films and fan shorts might be allowed by WB, to keep fan interest abuzz, much like Paramount eventually relented and began allowing fan films to exist without litigious intervention.

Interview: Tim and Summer chat with Troy Rutter, the original Babylon 5 website wrangler, and more!

Troy tells us about the history of the Official B5 website, and his involvement from "The Gathering" on forward, including some rare early promotional items and online goodies, and the birth of "A Very Drazi Christmas".

Troy's websites are http://www.babylon5props.com and http://www.babylon5fans.com

Feedback: Gary lets folks know that the original version of "The Gathering" (first aired edit, Stewart Copeland's music) is now available on Hulu; Gary wonders why Zoe appeared to Lochley, and Tim still refuses to embrace quantum physics as an explanation for what happened in "Day of the Dead"; Gary wishes for more "management level" interactions from Psi Corps; Doug from Bremerton reminds us that Bester has been fighting "the war" against mundanes for a very very long time prior to the events in "The Corps is Mother, The Corps is Father"; more commentary on the use of dentics in Farscape as an example of future dental hygiene.

Deep Geeking: Tim, Summer and Jeffrey contemplate "Meditations on the Abyss".

Examinations range from speculations on why G'Kar may have initially wanted his book to only be published after his death and the possible nature of the responsibility for the spirituality and spiritual explorations of his potential students/followers; to the nature of rationalization when deciding between doing the "right" thing and the "true" thing in the cases of both Findell and Lennier; and even a little bit on unrequited love.

We also talk about some of the deep space shots, and Jeffrey talks a bit about how the images were coming in fresh from the Hubble for the graphics guys to play with in post.

If anyone wants to Guest Geek on any of the upcoming episodes, novels and comics, let us know! Send an email to Tim and Summer about it, and we'll get things set up!

Feedback: Gary wants to start a survey on what might be the best B5 episodes that would play best during Halloween week; and we do a quick off-the-cuff rundown of B5 cast and guest stars who made appearances in horror movies. Always beware the duck.

Jeffrey brings us some science news, letting us know that there are more and more reports from sky gazers that the International Space Station is becoming more and more visible during the daytime, just after dawn. If you want to find out when you might be able to see the station, check out Heavens Above.

Currently, the final Space Shuttle launch is scheduled for July 2010, so pay attention to any upcoming launches... they might be the last ones launched from the USA until after 2020.

And despite Jeffrey's disclaimers, we do indeed talk about baseball on this show, too.

Agent 6 (Edmund from Greenville) telepathically controls Tim and Summer on this special episode of the Psi Corps Podcast.

Deep Geeking: This week, we discuss "The Corps is Mother, The Corps is Father", and the special place that the Psi Corps holds in Edmund's heart.

We chat a little about seeing a different side of the inner workings of Psi Corps in general and Bester's methods of grooming potential proteges. Much of the discussion centers on speculation on how secretive and well armed the Psi Corps appears to be, and just how powerful telepaths might truly be in hyperspace.

Feedback: Covering a few quick voicemail messages this week: Neil from Bowie suggests that we contact Mojo via his blog in order to get him to come on for an interview; Frank from WV comments more on G'Kar in "Day of the Dead"; Gabe from Greenville comments on Rebo and Zooty being merely homages to Laurel and Hardy; Gary thinks that Byron's philosophical paradigm shift is really because he was being controlled or programmed by Lyta; Gary adds more supposition to where the original CGI data files might have gone; Gary agrees with Tim's assessment on how Delenn and Sheridan mishandled the dissemination of information to the Alliance worlds; Gary recommends "Planetary" by Warren Ellis somewhere in between discerning the difference between magic and advanced technology; Gary blames Summer for hearing the WB closing chimes at the end of the podcast music now.

Dragon*Con Report: Gary goes into detail on the handful of B5 panels, and some of the scheduling challenges introduced by the powerhouse event featuring William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy; and makes all fans jealous with anecdotes of his interactions with the series attendees Bruce Boxleitner, Tracy Scoggins, Claudia Christian, Peter Jurasik, Stephen Furst, and Julie Caitlin Brown.

Feedback: We run the risk a temporal rift by having Gary on the show while potentially addressing voicemails that Gary sent in. Tim says he was very careful not to cross any streams, though...

Neil comments on the Season 5 Telepath arc having the same tragic spiral as the Centauri arc; Frank from WV comments on G'kar's reluctance to hang out in Brakiri space during "Day of the Dead"; Gabe from Greenville adds a different perspective to why Morden might have appeared to Lennier... to ask that question!

Tim and Summer venture down the rabbit hole, and ponder the implications of the vast lack of dental hygiene portrayed in science fiction television. Are SF TV writers simply avoiding having to create new dental technology, or having to explain the continuing use of bristles on a stick, or is it simply to save precious minutes for real storytelling?

Deep Geeking: This week, we discuss "The Ragged Edge", a pivotal episode in the growth of both the Interstellar Alliance and G'Kar; and in the fall of both Centauri Prime and Michael Garibaldi.

We talk about the hestitation of G'Kar to embrace his new role as spiritual guide for the Narn, and Ta'lon's role in helping him open up to the possibilities from being a spiritual teacher; about Garibaldi's slow fall back into the bottle having dire consequences for his safety and his friend's life during a mission; and the revelation to the core group about the different Centauri factions at work in the royal court, the probable connection of one of them to the raids on Alliance member worlds and the likely threat level to Londo's life should he find out and go asking the wrong questions in the wrong places.

We also ask the question "Who killed Tafiq?" because of the uncertainty of whether or not the same people who killed him were also the same ones who killed the pilot.

And remember...

When seeking instant enlightenment,
You must put your face in the book.

Feedback: In this week's emails, we address the changing appearances of the Drakh, and whether "Drakh" is a name for a collective of races instead of for a single race of dark servants; some theories of the extent of Lyta's enhanced abilities against mundanes being stronger than they might be against a Psi Cop, and some speculative casting for a B5 "reboot"; anecdote on the pulling of Zima from Austin Powers; and a few more opinions on spirituality and religion and the vast grey area encompassing both.

Tim, Summer and Jeffrey discuss a prop that a fan found on a website, being proclaimed as something "for a small actor's head". Jeffrey surmises that since the prop is listed as being foam, he believes that it might have been a cast or mold, rather than the actual head, since all of the real Vorlon heads were fiberglass.

Next, there's a little discussion about a comment found on the io9 article on inexpensive aliens that still hold up after the years... to Jeffrey's knowledge, there was not any Vorlon puppet, and he himself was most definitely not attacked by the production crew with hammers.

Interview: Gary Hasson of Lightspeed Fine Art joins us to chat about how his involvement with scifi television and Babylon 5. He's done art for Star Trek, Star Wars, Stargate, Xena, Hercules, Farscape, BSG, and many more as well.

Gary also tells us about his recent trip to Dragon*Con, and catching up with the B5 cast members, the various portraits, and much more.

Feedback: With this week's voicemails, we entertain more observations and creative visualizations on alternative "Day of the Dead" scenarios, including better uses of Morden, commentary on Penn Teller's performance and impact, and more! Can you imagine Marcus as a piece of wall art in Medlab, encased in carbonite and preserved in stasis until such time medical science can heal him.

Deep Geeking: Tim and Summer discuss "Phoenix Rising", and the beginning of the fallout from Byron's death and the resulting uprising of rogue telepaths against the Psi Corps. The emotional impact of Byron's death on the free telepaths, and the emotional impact of the manner of the rogues' death on Bester are apparent, so Summer likes the payoff much better than some elements of the story leading up to the conclusion.

Feedback: Many questions and observations on "The Day of The Dead", and the questions on whether zombies are dead or undead and how that status would affect the appetite of a hungry Pak'ma'ra.

Feedbackapalooza: Voicemail highlights this episode: Arkle theorizes on the real reason for some of the fans' deep dislike of Byron; the three unproduced Crusade scripts are summarized in the Crusade supplement of the Babylon 5 Role Playing Game book... who knew?

Hated Bunny wants to know if the "original trilogy" of novels will be amongst the books we'll be covering when we start discussing the B5 novels... since those aren't canon and are most likely the unauthorized books published by Mongoose, it's doubtful and highly unlikely, since we thought that none of those were ever published; Gary relates to us a reason why 7-years-old may be too young to being indoctrination into Babylon 5; Cathy from the League of Non-Aligned Knitters lets us know that her daughter began watching B5 at 10-years-old, and has watched most of the episodes 5-6-7 times each, and is impressed by her daughter's geek prowess;

Neil listened to the JMS interview again and notes that the quality of the CGI for when it was done was tops for when it was done, and Summer wonders if the cases for the newly released "repackaged" DVD sets are the same or if they're redesigned;

In responding to more emails about "Day of the Dead", the banter devolves into thumb wrestling battles and Rock-Em Sock-Em Robots challenges.

Tim relates some confirmation from the JMS newsgroup about the state of the original CGI source files and whether or not they could be re-rendered for a future high definition edition of B5, and the Great Maker thinks that in the end, it would be more cost-effective to redo all of the CGI segments from scratch in hi-def.

Summer would buy high definition remastered sets of Babylon 5, because the cases of the sets she currently owns are falling completely apart.

Deep Geeking: Tim and Summer talk about "A Tragedy of Telepaths", discussing the inevitable turn of events around the telepath situation towards the tragic ending that most around Sheridan feared would come to pass, especially once Bester released the hounds.

Feedback: Emails this time around: Vlad mentions how Avatar: The Last Airbender used the lines "Who are you, and what do you want"; Mike Tuck throws out more info on Lt Corwin's rank, but the questions is more around what his role is, because we never see him in a command situation in place of Lochley as we saw with Ivanova taking command in Sheridan's stead; Valerie was disappointed by the joking repart#233; about West Virginia Day; David wonders about atheism in B5 and in scifi in general, and wants to know our thoughts on free thinkers, secular humanism, atheism, agnosticism, and the many levels of religion found in all communities of the world.

Deep Geeking: Tim and Summer discuss on "In the Kingdom of the Blind", and Summer has a few nits to pick about some of the rash, early actions to force the Alliance member worlds to give telepaths a home of their own.

The argument can be made that Byron's fatal misstep was the timing of his assault on the secrets of the ambassadors, but Summer thinks that for someone who preaches peace and pacifism, that's just a poorly impulsive, irrational and childish first move. Tim thinks it highlights the true tragic nature of Byron's character, which for him makes the character flaws more believable.

Feedback: Kurt pimps GoToMeeting for us; Kurt comments on the "The Day of the Dead", and wonders if a Pak'ma'ra would have tried to eat their visitor from beyond the dead, and Tim thinks Kurt overthought the process... and would the Pak'ma'ra be the ultimate first line of defense against a zombie apocalypse?

E-Raven mentions starting to watch Babylon 5 at the tender age of 3 years old... and is still a fan now at the age of 12! What hooks a 3-year-old on the show?

		<itunes:summary>Welcome to Show #167!

If you had the means, would you pay $225,000 a bottle for tequila?

In July 2263, Garibaldi embarks on a secret project to reverse-engineer Minbari and Vorlon technology in order to speed up construction of Destroyer Class White Star ships. Did this lead to the construction of Excalibur, and the larger cruiser we saw in Lost Tales?

Deep Geeking: Tim and Summer disagree on "Day of the Dead", and boy, do we chat about THAT difference of opinion! Written by Neil Gaiman, it's the first produced episode not written by JMS since Season 2 (since "Knives"?).

Tim thinks it's a weak effort, and Summer thinks it's one of the better episodes of Season 5 (and everyone knows how Summer feels about most of Season 5). But Summer still calls shenanigans on Tim's refusal to accept quantum physics as a way to explain how that section of B5 becomes linked to the Brakiri homeworld.

Would seeing Marcus have made more of an impact on Lennier than seeing Morden? Would that appearance have co-opted the hope that Marcus was not dead, but in suspended animation, awaiting a technological advance that could successfully revive him?

Feedback: Ask, and ye shall receive: Jarsto surfaces to lay the correction smackdown!

Tim is Tim, Jeffrey is Summer, and Gary is Jeffrey. It's so confusing...

The guys discuss the "Ten Women Who Get a Really Raw Deal in B5" list, which you can find at The Completely Useless Guide to B5.

Gary is disappointed that Vol 2 of "Asked Answered" doesn't have its own introduction, but other than that all expectations were met, and he's saving it for voicemails.

Deep Geeking: Tim and Gary talk about the developments and character shifts from "Secrets of the Soul". The first secret revolves around Byron discovering the extent of the Vorlon's involvement in the creation of telepaths, and the guys chat about Byron's dramatic shift from peaceful resistance to enraged outcast because of that new knowledge.

The other secret involves the long-held secret of the Hyach and how Dr Franklin discovers that the results of their actions centuries ago was the instrument of their own eventual decline.

Feedback: Gary responds to one of his own voicemails, letting us know that he's swamped with Parsecs submissions, and leaves us to mull over the "censorship" of the showing of Centauri female genitalia. Meta Gary Moment!

Halfway Day means we're halfway through the calendar year... and now we know!

In emails, Brian in NY wonders if a reinvisioning or a rebooting of Babylon 5 be good enough or if a new storyline would be better; Maureen is still working her wa through the podcast backlog, and wants to know what happened to Jarsto; Michael comments on Tim and Summer could be missing that B5 had a greater cultural impact than we realized.

Deep Geeking: Tim, Summer and Jeffrey discuss "Strange Relations", and how previously unrevealed interpersonal relationships begin to lead to shifting allegiances and alliances.

Feedback: Edmund adds his two cents on where the original Season 4/5 break would have happened and what Season 5 would have looked like had we known sooner that there would be a Season 5 and had JMS not lost his notes; Andrew also adds his voice to the legions that want to see a continuation/conclusion to the Crusade story line in any format; Rapid Eye sticks up for Jeffrey... sort of.

Jeffrey tells us about a rare B5 collectible: a miniature bus stop diarama with a B5 promo ad on the side of the tiny bus, made by TNT to promote the show. And fans express their desire to see more of our favorite ISN anchor, Jane Nolastname.

Hilary sends in an email expressing her disappointment with the shoe-horning in of the background relationship between Sheridan and Lochley; Brian also muses on the sudden appearance of life pods on the station (where were they before, and after "View From the Gallery"?)

No Jeffrey this week, he's off being the big-time Hollywood producer. We miss the Vorlon, but he's being wined and dined, so it's all good.

Tim comments on his copy of "Asked and Answered: Volume 1", and the slight differences between the finished version and the pre-production versions we'd already seen, and more.

Summer also regales the audience with select readings from her copy of the Fan Club provided "Crusade Writers Bible", hopefully addressing some of the questions about Gideon's Apocalypse Box, and Dureena's proposed destiny.

And yes, the red Fan Club stamp means it's official, so go ahead and buy that copy off of eBay, Gary.

The interview everyone clamored for but hadn't been holding their breath waiting for has come to pass.

JMS, The Great Maker, graciously allows Tim and Summer to throw a seemingly endless stream of questions about the origins and creation of Babylon 5, the production and growing pains of the show, and dealing with the vagaries of the industry of Hollywood, the bizarre perfect storm surrounding Crusade on TNT, and more.

And yes, this interview went long enough that the only way to do it justice was to split it over two episodes, so come back next week for part 2!

Deep Geeking: This week, Tim and Summer delve into "Learning Curve", and Tim admits that while he likes this episode, there are a few dramatic elements throughout the story where the cliches fell flat for him.

Was it pacing? Timing? Something else entirely?

Discussion: Listener Mike Y throws out the suggestion that Crusade might be able to continue in audio dramas; Sean admires the B5 related in-jokes that Jeffrey has been incorporating into the Go To Meeting ads, and would desperately love it if JMS could join Tim and Summer in Deep Geeking on "Sleeping in Light".

Summer recounts the story of discovering some items of interest on her final stash of VHS tapes, including the Sciography episode for the original Battlestar Galactica, and an episode of SF Vortex featuring JMS, Harlan Ellison, and Herb and Yvonne Solow.

Feedbackapalooza Jr: Because of rogue tachyons bombarding the area around Draco Vista Studios, we are experiencing a causality break that threw spatial-temporal ordering into disarray, giving us 3 Summers but no Tim, no Jeffrey and no Mike.

So in order to prevent any permanent damage to the space-time continuum, we bring you a special episode: Feedbackapalooza Jr!

Gary wants to know if Lochley ever specifically stated which side of the Earth Civil War she was on; Gary was amused by the GoToMeeting ads; Gary is shopping for tequila and follows Jeffrey's recommendation; Gary wonders if there was a parallel between the different seasons of B5 and the different chapters viewed in "Deconstruction of Falling Stars"; Gary muses on whether or not Lennier thinks joining the Rangers will improve his chances to be with Delenn after Sheridan dies in 20 years; Tom appreciates the looming feeling of dread cast over Season 5; Tom also loves that Season 5 also breaks all the main characters out of the delineations drawn up for them in Seasons 1-4; next, Tom gives a Star Trek analogy for the character shifts we see in Season 5.

Arkle adds some perspective on the "Vorlon on the Roof", and wonders why Summer didn't like the segment with the monks from "Deconstruction"; Doug surmises that maybe the shrapnel from shooting through ducts caused the injury that bled (shenanigans!); Brian solves the problem of what color bunny ears the Easter Kosh would be wearing; Gary thought that Lochley had more of a command presence than Ivanova and Sheridan right from the start.

Emails: Steven wonders if it would be possible to get an interview with Haley McLane, the voice of the station's computer; Robinson wonders if Jerry Doyle could be the love child of Bruce Willis and Terry O'Quinn... and John provides some info on why the Space Shuttle couldn't manuever from the Hubble to the ISS, and suggests playing with the Orbiter Flight Sim game.

From deep in the Vorlon archives, Summer-3 reads a memo about a B5 story making the cover of a magazine called "The Screening Room", and the article about the acquisition of B5 by TNT.
