		<itunes:summary>Welcome to Show #143!

Discussion: NY Comic Con announced that JMS definitely had to cancel his appearance, since there was no way that he'd be able to make both NYCC and the BAFTA Ceremony where Changeling has been nominated for Best Original Screenplay.

And Warner Bros is now considering making the steps necessary to find out what JMS's definition of "big" is in the "big budget only" declaration he made about the only way he'd do another feature length film project. While we aren't getting our hopes up too high yet, some of us can only wonder what took them so long.

We get bubbly for a bit about the amount of fresh B5 content out there, and that's still coming along.

Deep Geeking: Tim and Summer discuss "Between The Darkness and The Light", the episode which marks a significant turning point in the war to take back Earth from Clark's forces.

The morale hit taken by Sheridan's capture is turned around by them breaking him out and rescuing him, and by the White Star fleet's destruction of Earth's advanced, Shadow-tech cruisers.

Is this the first glimpse we see of Lyta's steps towards her dark, angry side? Is the technique of telepaths suggesting "pain" a standard self-defense or protective disabling technique since all telepaths are capable of doing that?

And Tim has a huge gripe about Ivanova's battle speech, wondering why the opposing destroyers just didn't start shooting while she was ranting. How many other people despise that part of the scene for being too speechy or too long?

Visit Deep Geeking, and if you want to contribute a geeking essay, send a note to Summer.

Feedback: Doug lets us know that the way they were able to completely remove the Keeper from David Sheridan was explained at the end of the Centauri trilogy of novels; Gary calls in to offer his appreciation for the extra long clip show, and wanted to know if Jeffrey was silent during his scenes or if he had to learn the lines with the rest of the actors (yes, he had to learn the lines).

		<itunes:summary>Welcome to Show #142!

Sorry this is so late... Summer came down with a bad case of "too many projects"-itis, and completely forgot that she'd started to post this episode, but didn't finish posting it. Yeesh.

JMS' scheduled appearance at NY Comicon (Feb 6-8) may have to be canceled since the movie The Changeling has been nominated for several BAFTA Awards (the British equivalent of the Oscars).

Jarsto joins us this episode... proof positive that he was NOT captured by Vorlons for experimentation. He tells us about the upcoming new episodes of "Three-Edged Sword", the audio drama over at Voices of Babylon, and their planning for new B5-based audio dramas, and the call for scripts and story ideas from other people.

Tim relates an anecdote from work that directly relates to our most recent episodes of Babylon 5, especially the topic of tonight's discussion.

Deep Geeking: Tim, Summer and special guest Jarsto delve into "Intersections in Real Time", definitely one of the most difficult episodes to watch the first time around.

The psychological abuse we see Sheridan being subjected to is also felt by the viewer because of the structure of the episode... there is no cut away to a B story, no time jumps in scene, and the relentless manipulation in pursuit of a truth they want to use for their own purposes.

It's also another wonderful example of the use of a stage play composition, both in set design and writing/acting, to intensify the the emotional impact of the interactions and the reasons for them.

How much JMS' background in psychology played in crafting this episode would be a fun thing to find out, and Summer wonders if JMS ever read Psychological Warfare by Col. Paul M. A. Linebarger (aka Cordwainer Smith).

And Summer was mistaken about a few details: Linebarger didn't write the book for the Army... he was in the Army at the time, and it was published by Infantry Journal Press while he was with the Institute for Advanced International Studies, but the book was an examination of the topic from WWI and WWII. It's also long long out of print, and copies run $500 and higher these days, but she'd love to read it someday.

Visit Deep Geeking, and if you want to contribute a geeking essay, send a note to Summer.

Chat: Tim's been geeking on the Apollo Moon Missions over at the Apollo Talks podcast, so check it out!

Yes, it's been awhile since we've had a new show... didja miss us? We hope this show makes up for that long break.

Jeffrey regales us with a Majel Barrett convention tale as we honor her memory (she passed away on December 18 2008 of leukemia).

Tim tells us about a new TV project that JMS is working on, and we all hope that a SAG strike doesn't happen to knock things awry.

Interview: It's the interview almost everyone has been waiting for. Ed Wasser joins us this week, and he tells us how he thinks that the attraction to Morden comes from the undeniable allure of the mystery and the appeal of the bad guy. We also talk about how he came to Babylon 5, and how his asking for a more dangerous part led to him getting the role of Morden, his fan club and convention visits, and more.

The depth and reach of Morden's plans definitely affects the entire series, even though he was only on screen for 13 episodes. It's a testament to the writing and the performances that major characters that only appear from time to time can have such a large impact on the overall series story arc.

But, did you also remember him being on Sliders?

Feedback: Jeffrey pushes the buttons and plays some voicemail for us! Gary thanks Brad for the musical Holiday Gifts that were posted to the site; Gary comments on JMS's remake of Forbidden Planet, and manages to bring in the Zima again.

We have no idea who the mystery caller is that is going to call us back, but she amused the hell outta Jeffrey. Really.

Mike G sent an email about Jeffery's listing on the Who's Dated Who? website. Why doesn't Jeffrey Willerth have any WDW fans?

Kate in Chicagoland gives us some suggestions on topics to cover on The Babylon Podcast after we've gone through all the official and unofficial materials, and James in Tallahassee tells us that he's made many Lego B5 ships, including EA ships, Narn, Centauri, Minbari and Brakiri ships. We wanna see pictures of them!

		<itunes:summary>Welcome to Show #139!

No Jeffrey again this week, and we are sad. We blame "The Amazing Race".

Tim addresses some of the fan reaction to the news that JMS would be writing the screenplay for the planned remake of "Forbidden Planet". It will not be retro, as rumored earlier, and hopefully such an honored icon for scifi fans will not be mistreated in his hands. Even so, a lot of JMS fans and "Forbidden Planet" fans are more than a little grumpy about the prospect of it being remade by anyone.

Deep Geeking: This week, Tim and Summer discuss "The Exercise of Vital Powers", and Tim continues to exercise his right to vital puns.

Summer's appreciation of this episode comes from the complete break from what had been the traditional storytelling style in the series, and diving into old school hard-boiled pulp detective thriller territory. From Garibaldi's opening monologue, through his working for the power player who's suspiciouly far beyond his usual clientele, to his having to resist the damsel in distress who almost always lures the private eye to his doom... this episode is all pulp, all the time.

And even though Summer's seen this episode quite a number of times, she still discovered something new in this most recent viewing combined with a tidbit from Volume 10 of the scriptbooks... a new meaning in Garibaldi's closing monologue.

Want more? Visit Deep Geeking, and if you want to contribute a geeking essay, send a note to Summer.

Discussion: Tim reads an email from Stu about the Revell models due to be released in 2009: a Starfury and a B5 station. Whee! Summer wonders why there was never a model for B4, and Tim breaks bad with the puns again.

We also dream of a Lego B5 environment, complete with zocalo and aliens. If you're gonna dream, dream big, baby.

Edmund leaves us a voicemail with more news and reviews for Changeling.

Summer is really jonesing for access to the Titan Magazines stash of Babylon 5 pics that they used in creating the now-defunct Babylon 5 Magazine. Yeah, those would be nice to have.

No Jeffrey this week, he's working hard on "The Amazing Race", but not to worry... for some reason, the Vorlon puns still filter their way into the show.

Interview: This week, Tim and Summer talk with Jaclyn (pictured, L) and Jan from the Babylon 5 Scripts Project, and by a twist of fate, the date of this interview, October 29th, was the 3rd anniversary of the release of the first scriptbook!

Jaclyn and Jan give us as many details as they can about how this project came about, and the scope of putting something on this scale together, possible future volumes, and much much more!

Want more? Visit Deep Geeking, and if you want to contribute a geeking essay, send a note to Summer.

Call to Action: While we haven't set a travel date yet, it's time to start requesting donations to help fund Summer's road trip into Vorlon Space, to catalog the items in Jeffrey's storage locker, so we can help him consolidate his storage needs. Please donate, and make a notation that it's earmarked for the Excursion into Vorlon Space, and those who donate will get first crack at items, before they're made available to auction to the live feed listeners, and then to the general public.

		<itunes:summary>Welcome to Show #135!

Put me in coach, we're ready to play, today! Of course, since it's the first day of the World Series, we have to put in our predictions for who we'll think will win, or who we hope will win. Summer is rooting for Philly, but Jeffrey's hating on the Fightin' Phils! Summer just wants Philadelphia's championship curse to end, and thinks this is a great chance for them to do so.

And, we have a moment of silence to mourn the decision to by Coors to discontinue Zima production. Could it be a Shadow plot? Let the silly speculation run rampant... that's what we're here for!

Call to Action: While we haven't set a definite travel date yet, it's time to start requesting donations to help fund Summer's road trip into Vorlon Space, currently around mid-November, to catalog the items in Jeffrey's storage locker, so we can help him consolidate his storage needs. Please donate, and make a notation that it's earmarked for the Excursion into Vorlon Space, and those who donate will get first crack at items, before they're made available to auction to the live feed listeners, and then to the general public.

Deep Geeking: This week, Tim and Summer delve into discussion about "No Surrender, No Retreat". We talk about the decision to ask the League to stay on the sidelines until the fighting's done; the timing of some of the events in the course of the episode; the difference between Sheridan choosing a philosophical solution to end the Shadow War versus resorting to a shooting fight to free the colonies that were under siege; and more.

Want more? Visit Deep Geeking, and if you want to contribute a geeking essay, send a note to Summer.

Discussion: Jeffrey's spent his time digging up Zima ads on YouTube. Because he could. Why is Zima now linked with zombies in Summer's mind? Is Zima an undiscovered zombie repellent? Do we want to find someone from Zima to talk about the "good old days" when B5 was on the air?

Chris from England wonders if the relationship between Lise and Edgars might have been influenced by Psi Corps ahead of time, in support of the plot involving Garibaldi's programming; and he surmises that the Med Bay might be near the fighter bays, to get wounded pilots to treatment quicker.

World Series Predictions (made on 10/22): Tim says Tampa in 7, Mike says Tampa in 5, Summer says Philadelphia in 5, and Jeffrey says Philadelphia in 5.

Deep Geeking: This week, Tim, Summer and special guest Gary discuss "Moments of Transition". There's some disagreement on the perceived speed of Neroon's change of heart, some great appreciation of Ivanova's performance in the final scene, and more.

What are the chance that Gary won't call in any voicemails on this episode? No it doesn't matter that he's sitting here with us...

Want more? Visit Deep Geeking, and if you want to contribute a geeking essay, send a note to Summer.

Discussion: John in New England reminds us that the comic "In Valen's Name" tells us what happened to B4 after the previous Shadow War, which leads to a discussion about the construction and design of B1-B3 and B4.

Are you sick and tired of Tim editing down your audio comments before sending them to Mike? Then do what Gary does and just come on by to sit in!

Interview: B5 fans have always been creative. This week, we are happy to introduce you to the "League of Non-Aligned Knitters"... B5 Fans Who Knit.

Tim, Summer, and Jeffrey chat with Catherine, Heather, Laura, Amanda, and Elizabeth about the convergence of Babylon 5 viewing and knitting (and other scifi shows). There are practical applications for scifi fans to know how to knit... you're going to have to make your own clothing after the zombie apocalyse, ya know.

Be forewarned, the puns flow freely in this session... and there's a knitted Dalek. How cool is that?

Want more? Visit Deep Geeking, and if you want to contribute a geeking essay, send a note to Summer.

Discussion: It is really fun to find out that more people are still coming to Babylon 5 because of interests in other things, having never seen the show before and falling in love with it, keeping the fandom alive and growing.

We also discuss true options for scifi themed reality programming, something with more appeal to the average scifi fan than WWE Raw, and we talk to Gary to get the scoop on the voicemail madman.

And for some reason, the knitting puns still keep coming.

Jeffrey's back in fine form, but still recovering nicely from the Vorlon Virus. Tim reads a message from JMS about progress on the Lensman project, and Summer still wants more news about World War Z.

Zombielon 5?

Feedbackapalooza: Or would this week better be called Garypalooza? Either way, the Vorlon is easily amused when listening to phone spam with audio effects applied to the clip.

Jeffrey's sick, Summer's remote, and Tim's on the landline from hell. Mike couldn't even stay in the room, and Brad gritted his teeth the entire editing time.

Deep Geeking: This week, Tim and Summer chat about "Conflicts of Interest". Tim points out how much more CGI was in this episode than usual, and appreciates how the heightened tensions were played out between characters.

We discuss how much of Garibaldi's alienation of his friends is likely the result of the programming "enhancing" some of his natural tendencies, and of the machinations that both Sheridan and Delenn must start putting in motion to save their resepective homeworlds.

Go check out Deep Geeking when you get a chance, and if you want to contribute a geeking essay, send a note to Summer.

Discussion: Jeffrey hacks up a lung. We have a response on the choices for who'd throw Sheridan his bachelor party. Not only do we want to know what a Vorlon does to throw a party, we discuss the possible ramifications of having space-faring races getting dead drunk and playing with the various buttons on spaceships. Starstuff writes in that the Babylon Podcast has been her ray of sunshine all year, and shares her appreciation.

Yes, we can make people laugh, both intentionally and by accident, so tell us your tales of when our plucky little show made you laugh, or shared new knowledge with you.

And X-Wings would lose to both Starfuries and Vipers.

		<itunes:summary>Welcome to Show #129!

Jeffrey is under the weather this week, so Brad Bowyer of PodCulture joins us for his birthday!

Tim relays some brief JMS and B5 related tidbits that filtered in this week: JMS confirms that the Jeremiah finale "Interregnum" was meant to be a finale for him (and where is Jeremiah Season 2 on DVD, anyway?); "World War Z" has been picked up by Brad Pitt's production company (script written by JMS... I wanna read a copy too!); JMS explained more about the "no more Lost Tales" statement (standalones are harder to budget than series); and Tim is disappointed by no new Lensman news yet.

Deep Geeking: Tim, Summer and Brad chat about "Lines of Communication". The funny thing is, Tim has no recollection of seeing this episode ever before. There must be a rogue PsiCop around doing mind wipes, because it's very very hard to forget the dancing Drakh scene.

We discuss the influence the bombardment of anti-B5 propaganda on Sheridan's state of mind, the repurposing of the War Room, and the urgent need of Delenn's intercession on Minbari affairs, which have deteriorated since her dissolution of the Grey Council, and the connections Frankling and Marcus are making on Mars.

Truly, Summer can empathize with the crew's seemingly perpetual lack of sleep.

Go check out Deep Geeking when you get a chance, and if you want to contribute a geeking essay, send a note to Summer.

Discussion: Summer promotes the newly available "Chronologies of Babylon 5" (available now from Babylon 5 Scripts); James in Dallas sent in an email in just to double-check Mike's jello-wrestling preferences; Arkle really wanted to submit a question to JMS about "A Call To Arms" because he didn't like the music... both Summer and Tim liked the music that Evan Chen composed for that movie and for Crusade, so we aren't sure what specifically Arkle didn't like.

Do Over!

Cellphones, Dodger games, stadium organs, and podcast recordings just do not mix. Honestly, it sounded like a good idea in theory...

Deep Geeking: Tim and Summer talk about "Racing Mars", delving into the abundant humor playing around the relationship between Franklin and Marcus and their cover story for going to Mars, in Ivanova relieving Sheridan of duty and in trying to make deals with smugglers in the hopes of opening up new supply lines for the station.

We also talk about the possible machinations behind the programming that's driving Garibaldi to make the choices he's making, and how much influence over him the programmed parts are having over him, and we get a small glimpse deeper into the Keepers and how deeply they embed themselves in their targets.

Woo. Hoo.

Go check out Deep Geeking when you get a chance, and if you want to contribute a geeking essay, send a note to Summer.

Babylon 5 Extra: Just Mr. Londo by the great Luke Ski

Discussion: Tim wonders if the Drazi party that Ivanova attended was really another Green-Purple ambush, and apparently Tim never attended one of those 3-day parties while in college. Gary from Jacksonville joins in to give a Dragon*Con report on the Jerry Doyle and Walter Koenig panel that he attended.

		<itunes:summary>Welcome to Show #127!

This week's show was slightly delayed because of Dragon*Con. Thank Brad for imbibing in the Red Bull to speed his post-con recovery and get the editing done.

Vorlons and political tangents do not mix. The puns are too much, it's too late for the sane ones to vote. That, and the smoke machines. Let's hear it for the Hollywood Wafters Guild!

Deep Geeking: This week, Tim and Summer talk about "Atonement", and we pick nits about the pacing and some aspects of the execution in this episode... notably on why Delenn's clan waited so long before taking issue with her relationship with John Sheridan, and what exactly is the purpose of the assistant in The Dreaming, anyway? Was Lennier's guidance colored by his feelings for her, and his subconscious hopes of separating Sheridan and Delenn?

Tim doesn't care for the "genie in the bottle" element of The Dreaming as a plot device to reframe some badly needed exposition and back story. For the weight and potential impact of what was revealed in this episode, could it have been pieced out to viewers differently? The mandate of summoning Delenn home for this questioning was mostly a surprise, and some breadcrumbs about this being a looming issue might have taken care of some of that.

Go check out Deep Geeking when you get a chance, and if you want to contribute a geeking essay, send a note to Summer.

Discussion: In an email for Jeffrey, Gene from Greenville wants to get his opinion on the real impact of JMS' statement on current or future collaborations with WB; James in Tallahassee agrees that BSG's Vipers would indeed wipe the floors with B5's Starfuries and Thunderbolts (warning... serious geeky tangent approaching!); Rod in Nashville sent in a voicemail in praising JMS' out-of-the-box resolution to the Shadow War, a victory of wills and philosophies, rather than resorting to a shoot-out in space.

Kosholympics. Run with it.

Summer clarifies the details behind her cryptic statements from a few weeks ago, dispelling the many rumors that she's leaving the podcast (never!), or that we're going to start making Babylon 5 Phase II independent/fan film productions (tempting!). All she did was help out with cleaning up some of the chronology data that'll be in "The Chronologies of Babylon 5" book that's coming our from babylon5scripts.com.

Deep Geeking: This week, Tim and Summer talk about "The Illusion of Truth", and the impact of propaganda, and how Sheridan's hopes for getting their side of the story out to the people of Earth and the Earth Alliance by manipulating the ISN crew that comes on board backfire, creating the exact opposite impression that they wanted to make.

Go check out Deep Geeking when you get a chance, and if you want to contribute a geeking essay, get ahold of Summer.

Discussion: Mike plays a B5/Gnome mashup that appeared in the Slice of SciFi Voicemail Show... Garden Gnome 5! Jeffrey affirms that Hollywood has run completely out of ideas, since they're bringing back "The Banana Splits Show" (we just want the Danger Island segment, actually).

Tim reads some comments from the website as feedback on some of our more recent shows about the rights to Babylon 5 stories (films and books and tv specials), and the script for The Memory of Shadows; A Studio Lurker lets us know the intricacies and the hoops involved in getting permissions to print more B5 books and comics, and further cements Summer's opinion that WB is a broken system hogtied by it's own divisional competition rather than a healthy, efficient entertainment corporation (apparently it doesn't really make money, as the poor TW/AOL/WB shareholders can attest).

Yes, Summer is a bit of an idealist... why do you ask?

Summer really need to schedule a time to rummage through Jeffrey's B5 archives. I see a Los Angeles Road Trip in the near future. Keep your eyes open for a Jeffrey eBay sale... and possibly a live feed only eBay sale?

Deep Geeking: This week, Tim and Summer talk about "Epiphanies", a pivotal episode where alliances, plans and perspectives shift for a number of people. Garibaldi leaves his post as security chief, pushing Zack into an unexpected new role; Bester comes to B5 looking for Sheridan's help in exploring what the Shadows might have left behind on Z'ha'dum; Lyta begins to test the extent of her Vorlon-enhanced powers at Sheridan's request.

How much did Bester risk by betraying his Black Omega pilots? How effective is the EA blockade of the jumpgate before B5's gate really going to be for non-Earth ships? How might have Sheridan reacted if Lyta had brought her concerns about Bester's request and about going to Z'ha'dum to him first?

Go check out Deep Geeking when you get a chance, and if you want to contribute a geeking essay, get ahold of Summer.

Feedback: Kurt sent in a "Year 4/Year 5" mashup as a replacement intro, but we may end up using that as a show promo; Isaac in Ottawa disagrees with some of the comments on JMS' announcement, and gives us his perspective on fan productions, which spawns an interesting discussion about expectations and future possibilities and options for smaller B5 stories that would still fall into canon.

Kosh. Rastaman. I got nothin'.

Feedbackapalooza Part Deux!! Chris Lester from Metamor City Podcast and C.A. Sizemore are still in on the Feedback Fun.

Colin doesn't appreciate the tone of JMS' announcement; Freehold South chimes in on the JMS announcement, and feels blindsided by it; Bethany from OK comments on "Into the Fire", agreeing with Tim's desire to see what was going on in the Alliance ships saving Sheridan and Delenn, and disagreeing with Summer calling the Vorlons/Shadows "whiny".

Email from Jerry in Ashburn comments on alternatives to deeper explorations of the revelations from "Into the Fire", and suggests that "Intersections in Real Time" could have been cut (we disagree!); Edmund weighs in on the JMS announcement, theorizing that JMS might be trying to flex his newly found status to see what he might be able to create; John in Birmingham agrees with Brad's viewpoint on JMS' announcement (a comment from PodCulture).

New question: Vipers vs Starfuries? What do you think? Summer thinks the Vipers might actually take out the Starfuries, and while Thunderbolts might fare a shade better, they'd still lose out.

Mike Smithwick responds with what he would have cut from B5, and what he would have added in; Ann in CA wonders if JMS' announcement was more of an indication that he hasn't had the chance to really focus on creating more B5 stories, be it lack of time or introduction of a block; an X-Files tangent leads to a comparison between Chris Carter's long-term work versus JMS' long-term work.

Jeffrey notes that we haven't gotten Christopher Franke and Ed Wasser for us to talk to, and promises to do better; comments on inconsistencies "Into the Fire"; Andy comments on the "Into the Fire" discussion, and chimes in on what he thinks could have happened had Londo failed in his plan to kill Cartagia and destroy the Shadow ships on Centauri Prime; Valerie in MD disagrees with Tim's opinion that "The Long Night" was a bad title... she also would love to listen to a Lensman podcast, and is waiting for our commentary on the Script Books (we're working on that last one).

Go check out Deep Geeking when you get a chance, and if you want to contribute a geeking essay, get ahold of Summer.

Gary gives Summer and Brad directives on stuff to do for The Babylon Podcast, and starts bypassing Tim-Guarding-The Voicemail-Gate and sending vmails directly to Mike by sending them to the Slice of SciFi voicemail line by mistake; Markum from Indy loves hearing Jeffrey's Hollywood insider insight, and would love him to do a Business of Hollywood podcast (didja know about FPM show The Chillpak Hollywood Hour, hosted by X-Files alum Dean Haglund?); Neil from Bowie makes the comparison between Lorien transferring energy to Sheridan and Sheridan transferring energy to Garibaldi; Edmund gives everyone a taste of what folks who don't listen to the live feed missed, and blames Jeffrey's bizarre behavior on his proximity to Area 51; Mike from Boston thinks the geek girl episode really featured Jeff and Tim in "disguise"; Markum from Indy submits a supportive plea for JMS' position; Edmund wonders why Warner Bros bought the rights of the Foundation trilogy from Fox and what they'll do with it; an X-Files tangent leads to a comparison between Chris Carter's long-term work versus JMS' long-term work.

Jeffrey notes that we haven't gotten Christopher Franke and Ed Wasser for us to talk to, and promises to do better; Kate in Chicagoland thanks Mike for solving the B5/Zima conundrum... "Zima: Because everything else gets skanky"; Chris in England chimes in on the lack of beer on B5, and Chris Lester thinks space beer will be found on eBay real soon; Gene from Greenville also supports JMS' position on his stance for more B5 with WB; Kurt in St George wonders about the way JMS worded his announcement and if it effectively killed any more B5, and is hurt at being told that TLT was just crap that didn't enhance B5 at all.

Jeffrey has an upgraded studio at FarPoint Media Los Angeles, and boy does it make him sound good. Are they really working on the FarPoint Media Hawaii location? We shall soon see.

Tim had to attend family functions, but we've more than made up for it by having Lejon from Chandler in studio, and Gary from Jacksonville joining it to discuss some of the latest B5 news with us.

Discussion: We've already reposted JMS' comments on moving forward with more Babylon 5, and the fan reactions are still flying all over the Internet. So Summer, Jeffrey, Gary, Michael and Brad discuss, in great detail and depth, with occassional comment from the chat room.

Anyone want to investigate the possibility of low budget fan film projects in the B5 universe? We already have fan-based audio projects, and archival projects... wonder what the options are and the chances are of B5 movies coming from a studio other than Warner Bros, or from a funded fan base, a la the many Star Trek and Star Wars fan film projects that are already out there.

And no, we're not going to re-record the Babylon Podcast Season 3 opening again!

Go check out Deep Geeking when you get a chance, and if you want to contribute a geeking essay, get ahold of Summer.

Deep Geeking: Tim and Summer delve into Deep Geeking on "Into the Fire" the pivotal episode in the confrontation between the younger races and the Shadows and Vorlons. Tim thinks it's a flawed episode, and so the discussion begins...

Feedback: Ruben in NJ wonders if the alien entity that invaded Sheridan in "Knives" was a remnant of a Vorlon that had been spying on the existing time-space for a Kosh in a different time, but just caught in a time rift (um, no).

Jeffrey wants to hear more messages from new listeners... feel free to call in!

Michael, Summer and Jeffrey recap the FarPoint Fool Party for the group, and Tim really wishes he could have visted the heat and enjoyed the fun. Summer still doesn't understand the appeal and attraction of this game called Washers.

Interview: Amy Guskin joins us to talk about her efforts to organize a group of B5 fans to acquire an original G'Kar mask and donate it to the Museum of the Moving Image in New York.

And you thought the Browncoats were good at organizing rescue efforts...

Discussion: Today, in sector 14, Tim had no emails or voicemails pulled aside, so there's nothing to discuss. Pay no attention to the live stream from the party... there's nothing happening here.

And because Jeffrey mentioned wanting 5 more years of doing the series, all of a sudden, Summer's imagining he and Bruce starring in an updated rendition of Butch and Sundance...

Questions from the chat room: Mike Stark wants to know what Jeffrey liked least about working on the show; Neroon wants to know what the preferred beverage would be if Zima could be replaced (because the beer would go skunky!); what B5 episode without commentary would you have liked to have heard commentary on (we should make a list).

Tim, Summer and Jeffrey welcome Brad on the line, and Kris in studio. The puns are out of control.

Interview: We are pleased this week to talk with The great Luke Ski, creator of the new FuMP hit, "No Sleep 'til Babylon".

Luke tells us about his being a B5 fan, of creating this song and many many others. Luke also tells us about the fundraising drive to help out Tom Smith.

We try to put Luke to the test and come up with potential songs on the spot... will he get back to us later with some gems? We'll have to wait and see.

Oh yeah... Ding.

Voicemail: Gary from Jacksonville needs clarification on whether the caves where Sheridan met Lorien were real, or metaphorical, being a construct where Lorien "caught" him; Gary needs clarification on when the 20-year deadline was set on the remainder of Sheridan's life; Arkle gives us his thoughts on why B5 isn't as high in the public consciousness as Buffy and other shows (and battles his cat in the process), and thinks the teaser ads on PTEN may have been the problem.

Tim and Summer are again flying without Jeffrey, but Tim reads some news from JMS posted to the news group about his experience at Cannes, and hinting that more news would be coming soon on a new project. Summer really wants to know more about this "Ninja Assassin" movie JMS has written... it's an imperative!

Deep Geeking: Tim and Summer jump into Deep Geeking on "The Long Night". Tim does not like the title of this episode because for him, it doesn't reflect or evoke anything significant from the episode for him. What do you think?

Sheridan finds a way to make a stand against the Shadows and the Vorlons at the same time, and convinces the League to stand together with him; and Londo's and G'Kar's plans come to fruition in an unexpected way. There's plenty of emotional impact to go around, and despite Tim's dislike of the episode title, he agrees that it's one of the better all-around episodes.

Chit-Chat: Jeffrey joins us for the episode closing, and he gives us an update on the Space Station flyby viewing from Los Angeles. Kurt in St George weighs in on Tim's comments on Shadows vs The Empire... he takes Tim to task, while also risking invoking the wrath of TD-0013, and also has a different view on Shadows vs Borg. Kurt... you need to detox from the Rock Star overdose!!

Also, Tim has wrangled an interview with The great Luke Ski, so stay tuned for that, coming up soon!

We have extra feedback to get through, so you know what that means? Feedbackapalooza, part 2!!

Anna is still here, live in studio, and since we're on a feedback roll, we just kept it going...

Email: Al recounts a B5 group viewing that included a local TV critic who viewed "Severed Dreams" with them; Mitch O wants to know what favorite part of the show we'd like to have seen expanded upon, and what parts would we have wanted to see less of; George Brickner tells us about his B5 action figure collection, which leads to a discussion of some of the goodies Tim and Summer each have; Bill W recounts B5 airing schedules back in the day; Kazzy wants to know what other awesome episodes to listen to; Paul in Vegas wants to know when to view "In The Beginning", chronologically speaking; Joe D requests the addition of reviews of the Script Books... all we need is a volunteer who has all 15 volumes and some extra time.

Bill laments the poor portrayal of Nightwatch members in "Ceremonies of Light and Darkness"; Molly adds a theory about the failure (or non-activation) of the Z'ha'dum planetary defense systems; Brendan wants to know how young someone can successfully be introduced to Babylon 5, and we suggest he start listening to How to Grow Your Geek, hosted by Susie the Southern Geek.

Jeffrey joins us for a message from Jason, who wants to know if there were any more music offerings from Andreas besides the collaboration album featuring B5 cast members.

Sorry this is late to the feed... technical issues ran rampant.

Tim, Summer, Jeffrey and Michael are joined by Anna, live in studio (she's in town for a conference), and she's just in time to experience Feedbackapalooza!

But first, Summer gets to ask Jeffrey about the production side of detonating Kosh's helmet in "Falling Towards Apotheosis", and we learn about the dangers of using too much primacord on a television set.

Voicemail: Eli from Portland contrasts Vir's and Londo's ability to apologize; Gary wonders about the discrepancies between Vorlons creating human telepaths and the assumption that they were created as cannon fodder in the war; Gary again, wanting to know about the state of homelessness on Earth and buying into the government's statement that no one was homeless; Bethany from OK is angry that none of the BSG people realize that their story's roots come from trails blazed by B5 and other old scifi shows; Gary disagrees with Tim's comment that the Shadows didn't have a Sheridan contingency plan; John from Jersey got his Script Book Volume 15; Gary relays JMS' comments on the monster in "Grey 17 is Missing"; Starfury spotted at the Air Space Museum; Gary again, thanking Brad's editing skills in pulling the finished show together; John from Jersey comments on the B5 episode scheduling during first run (one more time, it was different in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh); Gary wonders why it seems that Morden is still hanging out on the station after the Shadows start moving openly; Josh from Bangor weighs in on the Shadows picking Garibaldi's Starfury out of the pack that was milling around.

And thank Brad for the musical interlude: "No Sleep 'til Babylon" by The great Luke Ski

Tim and Summer are eager for tonight's episode, but Jeffrey is nowhere to be found. By a twist of fate, our in-studio guest, James Paul (Scicomer), is not only a Babylon 5 fan, he's also a researcher involved with the newest Mars lander, and he brought Script Book Volume 15 and a bottle of Corralejo with him!

And then, there was much Mars geeking.

Deep Geeking: Tim and Summer, with James, discuss the pivotal events in Falling Towards Apotheosis. Taking on the Vorlons is a bold move, even for someone who's returned from the dead.

Discussion: James tells us how he discovered Babylon 5, how he was on set to watch the filming of Londo's arthropod battle scene in "Sic Transit Vir", his meeting of June Lockhart and of The Great Maker.

In addition to letting Summer stroke and paw his pretty copy of Volume 15, James has also made the Library of Congress aware of the script books to they can acquire copies for the archive. He also wants to figure out how to get a "definitive" collection of science fiction works in the archive as well, so if anyone has any suggestions, take a peek at the online catalog to see if any of your favorite classics or groundbreaking works aren't in there yet.

Jeffrey secretly traverses the back hallways of VH-1 in search of quiet place to chat with us, and Tim has questions about the B5 action figures, seeing as how he came across a rare Ivanova variant and didn't know it until we told him. But he opened it, alas.

Jeffrey also thinks that all of the female action figures on that run all had the exact same faces, so we're sure someone will investigate. Summer never collected the action figures, and instead focused on the trading cards.

(kudos to Brad for the funny sound effects)

Deep Geeking: Tim and Summer discuss "The Summoning". There are many levels summoning going on in this episode, so the title is more apropos than initially apparent.

Discussion: Tim asks Jeffrey about the long tracking shot at the opening of this episode, and about how the sets were built to allow for longer shots to be made, and whether or not the crew had fun wrapping Jerry Doyle in a massive amounts of clingwrap. Could it have been the Snackman supplying the cling wrap?

Summer minions: wiki, joomla.

Jeffrey returns from Hawaii to tease us all about his Vorlon tan, and Tim revels in the fact that he and Bruce Boxleitner share a birthdate. Tim also recounts what he saw at the Star Trek Experience in Las Vegas, and got to see firsthand the Borg Invasion scenario that George Johnsen worked on.

Jeffrey also lets us know what show he's working on now: Celebrity Rehab on VH-1. So whenever he's not able to join us on Wednesdays, know that he's working on Season 2 of this series, and it really is something that's aiming to help.

Deep Geeking: Tim and Summer contemplate the mysteries and metaphors in "Whatever Happened to Mr. Garibaldi?" For a long time... this is a good one.

Listener Feedback: Tim passes on a question from George Brickner: "What does Summer need her minions to do?" First, Summer needs a vacation and some rest, then she'll need help with wiki setup, and Joomla configuration.

If it matters, Summer would love to see a script book or three solely about "Crusade". Just sayin'.

Jeffrey's happy, preparing to celebrate Kosho de Mayo, and giddy about the Dodgers winning big. Because Jeff's heading out to Hawaii, talk wandered over to his appearance on the show in a Hawaiian shirt and overalls.

Community Project: Find the Hawaiian shirts worn on the show. We need to make a list.

JMS will be attending Cannes Film Festival, to screen Changeling, and is all sorts of busy writing other feature film scripts. Could JMS be writing the screenplay for Lensman? Summer is intrigued about the prospect of a movie about Rising Stars.

Listener Feedback: Feedbackapalooza! It's a word that's sticking now.

Mick comments on the baseball talk in both Babylon 5 and Star Trek: in B5, baseball is still alive, and in Star Trek the sport is long dead, but in DS9 baseball is back and strong. How'd that happen? Mick also points out other similarities between B5 and DS9. Gary wants to know what screen credits Jeffrey has where he can be seen sans encounter suit, and asks again about the Mayport story. Should there be a warning label for the George Johnsen interview? We can't help it if you laugh out loud and distract your co-workers.

One vote submitted for a SciFi AllStars baseball team... and a question on whether Marcus could play baseball extrapolated from his skill with a Minbari fighting pike. Bethany from OK comments on "And The Rock Cried Out..." and on the one B5 episode to show someone new to the series. Eli thinks we missed a point in talking about "Z'ha'dum", the hypocrisy/irony of Justin's statements to Sheridan. Scott from the Gigcast proudly announces that he's rented Season 1 Disc 1 and is about to dive into the series for the first time.

Theory: Zima is the modern replacement to the never-endingly regifted fruitcake. That's the real reason why Zima exists in the 24th century... it kept getting passed on. Edmund adds some info from the Technomage trilogy to explain what happened during the White Star assault on Z'ha'dum (Galen did it). This leads to a discussion about what was going on on Z'ha'dum, if there was sleeping, or if it was a trap, or something else.

Non-sequitur: Pixar, Disney, wha?

Emails: Kurt from St George drops by the studio! Warlord adds commentary from JMS about the sacrifice of the White Star, taken from the back of one of the cards in the second series of trading cards. Aristotle wonders about how to direct new listeners to special podcast episodes first. Emily wonders about matching up Romo Lampkin vs Mr Morden. Jeffrey S wonders why human telepaths need to be on a line of sight when the Minbari telepaths could interfere with the Shadow ships from safely in the depths of their ships.

Gene from Greenville wonders what we'd want from what might be your last care package from home. Bill points out what he thinks is the worst plot hole in "Grey 17 is Missing". Kate from Chicagoland wonders what Kosh's personal effects may have been.

Second Life Info: FarPoint Media's castle is at http://slurl.com/secondlife/beraudes/203/151/49.

Babylon 5 Information Gathering: If you know of a dead or abandoned B5 related website that may be in need of a new home, let Summer know! Maybe we can mirror it here or house it on a sister site.

Deep Geeking: Summer welcomes Cat (SciFi Ranter Girl from the Lipstick Aliens), graphics designer and huge B5 fan (and long-time FarPoint Media chat room denizen) Cat Hulberg, and Susie the Southern Geek (host of How to Grow Your Geek) to come onboard and Deep Geek on "The Hour of the Wolf", the Season 4 premiere episode.

Here you have the women in John Sheridan's life going through various stages of denial, grief and bargaining, in an attempt to find out for sure what happened to him at Z'ha'dum, and by the end of the episode, there's still no closure in dealing with what happened, nor any new insight into knowing what did happen.

The girls geek on.

Interview: This week, George Johnsen, Babylon 5 co-producer (and apparently one of Jeffrey's cohorts in mischief), at last joins us!

Jeffrey had been trying for a while to get George on the show, but George is a busy busy guy. He's worked on a lot of the films and shows we love, and he loves the scifi!

We talk to George about the show, including some of the questions sent in by listeners, and the anecdotes and production details are both fascinating and fall-down funny.

Did you know George was also an original Cylon? Summer didn't, and that just warms her heart.

This is an interview you have to hear again and again, and you won't care that it runs the full hour.

Your feedback does matter, and is welcome! You can call us at 206-338-2259, or email us and tell us what you think... and likely hear it played or read on the show. Please try to keep the voicemail comments as brief as possible.

It's baseball season again, and Jeffrey has already started in on the Dodgers geeking. The conversation really does take a science fiction turn... B5 loves baseball, and Star Trek does not. What's up with that?

Deep Geeking: "Z minus 7 Days". After the silliness dies down, Tim and Summer discuss "Shadow Dancing", the episode that culminates in Sheridan's and Delenn's goal to get all of the League Worlds to work together in mutual self-defense against the Shadows. The B-story deals with Franklin dealing with the consequences of his actions and his choices, by literally talking things over with himself. And Jeffrey adds his own perceptions on why the cast (and crew?) were starting to look shaggy and scruffy towards the end of Season 3.

Feedback: Tim reads a comment from Katie on the website, wondering where Jeffrey's pants got to in the picture on the website. Jeffrey reveals that budget concerns led to people not getting hair cuts, and needing to share the pants allotment. Is that TMI, or what?

Jeffrey also regales us with an anecdote about a guessing game involving Polaroids and boobs. Michael is really trying to insert boobs into every FarPoint Media show... and Summer really doesn't know if she can make it stop!

Your feedback does matter, and is welcome! You can call us at 206-338-2259, or email us and tell us what you think... and likely hear it played or read on the show. Please try to keep the voicemail comments as brief as possible.

Summer is still looking for one more of the long versions of the B5 promos that ran on TNT prior to Season 5, the ones narrated by Keith David... anyone have any old VHS copies of S5 they taped from TNT? Specifically, the :30 spots, one featuring Ivanova and the other G'Kar... they were part of the series of ads TNT ran promoting the addition of B5 to their lineup. We have a copy of the G'Kar one, now we're holding out that someone out there has the Ivanova one!

Tim and Summer travel to the Vorlon Homeworld to record this week's show! That's right... there was no live feed last week because Jeffrey's studio isn't set up to feed out to the streaming servers... and the chat room was really antsy about missing their fix.

We're going to have to try to fix that, aren't we?

Deep Geeking: This week, Tim and Summer discuss "And the Rock Cried Out, No Hiding Place", and the intrigues undertaken by Londo regarding G'Kar and Lord Refa, a boost in morale from messages from the Resistance on Earth relayed by several visiting religious dignitaries, and Sheridan and Delenn discovered the method behind the madness that the Shadow attacks that have been plaguing the sector for the past few weeks.

Jeffrey adds some background on William Forward's portrayal of Lord Refa, and the good-natured banter between Mel Winkler and Louis Turenne.

Luckily, there was no carrying on cranky this week!

Listener Feedback: Mitch O sent an email saying that Jerry Doyle made a unannounced appearance at Megacon in Orlando 2 weekends ago, and said that Michael O'Hare was gravely ill. Tim couldn't find any supporting info online, but Jeff's going to try to find out for sure.

Lowell wonders if B5 will show up on The WB's new online web programming, but B5 was technically pre-WB Network, so it's unlikely, but we'd love to be happily surprised!

Upcoming Interviews: Jeffrey proposes a new interview format: we tell you who's coming up, and you send us questions to ask them! In two weeks, our guest will be co-producer George Johnsen! Send in your questions for George, and we'll get them aired! Send in an email or voicemail with your questions for George!

Your feedback does matter, and is welcome! You can call us at 206-338-2259, or email us and tell us what you think... and likely hear it played or read on the show. Please try to keep the voicemail comments as brief as possible.

Deep Geeking: Tim and Summer geek on "Grey 17 is Missing", and the consensus is that half the episode is amazing, in terms of story, future implications, and charged emotional situations, and the other half is... well, I think even after 10 years we're still trying to figure that out.

Listener Feedback: Gene from Greenville wonders if the Minbari Civil War might have gone longer if JMS had known sooner that the 5th season was secure; Jeremy in Denver has listened to the first 100 Babylon Podcast episodes over the past two months in order to catch up, and comments on seeing aspects of B5 Season 1 from a different perspective.

Deep Geeking: Edmund joins Tim and Summer for episode geeking this week, covering "Walkabout", a bridge episode that packs a lot of punch in some areas and that seems to fall off pace in others (in Summer's opinion, anyway).

We see Dr Franklin, hanging around in Down-Below, searching for something, but not quite sure yet. What he finds for a time could be a reflection of his own situation, or something else entirely. Then we meet the replacement Vorlon ambassador, and Lyta returns to the station, to resume her duties with the new Vorlon, desperate to find out what happened to Kosh, and volunteers for a field trip on the White Star.

Babylon 5 Information Gathering: If you know of a dead or abandoned B5 related website that may be in need of a new home, let Summer know! Maybe we can mirror it here or house it on a sister site.

Yes, we recorded a new Season 3 intro, to lessen the confusion about what we really meant by "it failed", and since JMS made some exciting announcements at Wondercon 2008, the joke became moot.

(L to R) Jeffrey Willerth, Key Grip John Warner, Gaffer John Smith

Interview: John Warner, Best Boy and Key Grip on Babylon 5, joins us to talk about his time on set, and making sure everyone's lit correctly and all the cameras move where they need to, and manipulation of the sets.

So head on down to your nearest production, and if it's safe to get into the studio, go hug a key grip for all that they do.

Then we talk about what you can find in Second Life as far as FarPoint Media and Babylon Podcast goodies, and traverse a small tangent into Technorama level tech geeking. Fear not, it loops back to B5 related chat at the end.

Jeff wishes everyone a Happy Vorlontine's Day, and Tim, Summer and Jeffrey take a moment to recognize a podcast milestone... okay, moment over. Let's get to the geeking!

Deep Geeking: We have a Deep Geeking treat for you... a guest geeker!

Mike McCafferty, actor and geek, joins us to share his long pent-up Babylon 5 theories. He believes that "War Without End" is the Grand Retcon of the series, and we all discuss a lot of points from casting to plot adjustments and future Retcon necessities in the series.

We argue about time travel and the story changes necessitated by Sheridan replacing Sinclair, the differences in the time compression between "Babylon Squared" and "War Without End", and so many more nitpicks, that most B5 geeks should be quite satisfied.

Visit Mike's website and say hello. And we'll let you know when the Invisible Man DVD hits the shelves!

Second Life Info: FarPoint Media's castle is at http://slurl.com/secondlife/beraudes/203/151/49.

If you go to Starship Sofa, check out the episode containing "Going Through Changes" by Pat Murphy. Summer read the story, and people have been enjoying the reading.

Babylon 5 Information Gathering: Can we and should we mount a Babylon 5 propaganda campaign, in order to get sales of The Lost Tales to the point where Warner really really wants to greelight more volumes of TLT? Let us know...

Also, if you know of a dead or abandoned B5 related website that may be in need of a new home, let Summer know!

Summer still needs to find the one more of long versions of the B5 promos that ran on TNT prior to Season 5, the ones narrated by Keith David... anyone have any old VHS copies of S5 they taped from TNT? Specifically, the :30 spots, one featuring Ivanova and the other G'Kar... they were part of the series of ads TNT ran promoting the addition of B5 to their lineup. So, how do you like the Babylon Podcast Season 3 open?

Deep Geeking: This week, we talk about "Ship of Tears", an episode with a tour de force performance by Walter Koenig. We get to see Bester as his usual menacing self, and we're surprised with a suprisingly human and vulnerable aspect to the character we'd come to despise.

Alliances are shaken and shifted. Lines are being more clearly drawn in the upcoming battle between the forces of Order and Chaos.

Feedback: Jeffrey's really jonesing to get to that jacuzzi, so we buzz through a couple of emails really quickly.
