And so it begins…

with the end of the regular Babylon Podcast episodes begins the careful planning of future special episodes.

Well, okay, maybe not carefully planned, but at least indulged in a little more pre-production than many of our regular episodes.

Would you like to hear the Babylon Podcast team do episode commentaries?

  • Yes (96%, 591 Votes)
  • No (4%, 24 Votes)

Total Voters: 615

Since the poll numbers are running very high in favor of us popping up now and again with our own commentary on Babylon 5 episodes, you tell us which ones should be on the list to get the special commentary track treatment.

If you don’t have time to do them all – I’d try and comment the key episodes in each season, plus the awful ones (which you can rip to shreds – Infection, TKO, and Day of the Dead (for Tim to destroy, and others to beat him down))

All of them would be insanity… you just want us to do another 2.5 years worth of shows ๐Ÿ™‚

I think we’d joked about doing something with the less-than-stellar eps, maybe one from each season, but doing something with a key episode from each season might also be something to consider.

If you want to do more in-depth discussions, the show was edited with natural break points for commercials, you could always put a “Please pause the DVD here” thing at those points and discuss what was going on in the previous segment there. I’d watch a few episodes this way.

Another option would be to discuss episodes that have a strong A plot paired with a weak B plot. You could ignore the weak plot and focus on the strong plot.

      Thank you for this podcast.

My vote is for “all of them” as well, but I guess I need to pull open my chute and float down to Reality Island here. I agree with the “TKO” approach, ie – plumping for episodes where the villains have stupid names – no, wait – I mean plumping for the less-than-stellar episodes / controversial episodes to foster humor and debate.

But seriously though – ‘Gyor’ – presumably as in “Gyor blimey, his parents were cruel, weren’t they?”

    How would they be distributed?
Would they be available as a downloadable file, (.mp4), or would they be only available via existing channels – YouTube etc?
I would appreciate it, if the option of the show being downloaded was available.

If we were to do the commentaries, they would be audio-only tracks, and would show up here as part of the regular shows feed, similar to the commentaries that Scifi Channel used to put out as a podcast for Battlestar Galactica while it was still being aired.

Unfortunately, copyright law would prevent us from posting any given Babylon 5 episode. But that’s not really a problem, because you have all the DVD sets, don’t you. Don’t you?

My Mom does. I had to sell mine when I lost my job. Right in the middle of my latest re-watch (I had just wrapped up Season 1 when I got canned). ๐Ÿ™

You sir, are a brave man. I’ve been either limited to part-time work or completely out of work the better part of the past 6 years, but selling some of my TV show DVD sets would be a tough road for me.

Yes, I have sold or traded-in many of my movie and movie compilation DVDs (and sold my Buffy TV box sets to Gary), and I might be able to someday justify selling Dead Zone and Andromeda but I don’t think I would ever sell my B5 sets, nor Angel, Numb3rs, or Firefly.

I wonder if Action! or Harsh Realm are consider collectible and worth anything these days… I could live without those, if I had to.

I feel ya on the work front. True story, I actually went so far as to check out a site called Adult Staffing. Sort of like a Monster.com, but for the adult film industry. not as a performer, just camera work or something like that. Found NADA within 20 miles of my current zip code. I’m in Southern California, how is that even possible?

While not explicitly agreeing with it in it’s entirety, I think you could do a lot worse than the io9 B5 article with its rundown of “essential episodes.” In particular, I agree that Season 4 is “one big long episode,” and each week is probably worthy of its own commentary.

I’m so sorry to see the regular podcast end. It’s been great.

Maybe we can look forward to a weekly “Dead Zone” podcast in the future? That would be fantastic. Or better, a Stephen King podcast similar to what James Smythe is doing over at the Guardian with his “Rereading Stephen King” column. Man, with all of the movies, television, comics, stories, and merchandising, that podcast would go on forever!

    Oh well, one can dream…

I would really only feel good about doing another podcast on a show that I’m passionate about. I have the entire “Dead Zone” series, mostly because they kept sending me review copies of the DVD sets, but I don’t know that I would necessarily do a run on it like we did here with B5. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely loved the first 2-3 seasons of Dead Zone, but too much after that falls into the “merely average” category.

I’ve said before that the only shows I know well enough to do an indepth discussion podcast on would be Angel, Miami Vice, and Robin of Sherwood. Robin of Sherwood technically only lasted 2 seasons, but there’s a ton of mythology to talk about in those seasons. I might also be able to throw The Pretender and Xena: Warrior Princeess into that ring, too. And don’t forget, I already dove into a podcast about Charlie Jade.

Now what could really be fun is doing a complete podcast run of The Tomorrow People, from the original ITV series, to the 90s Nickelodeon version, to the new version that the CW has in development… but the Nickelodeon version isn’t on DVD yet, and I don’t know a lot of people who even know about the original series, much less own the now-almost-out-of-print DVDs.

But for now, finding enough work to keep me fed and my Internet on must take precedence.
