Babylon Podcast: Show #34

Posted 2006-09-27 12:20 am in Shows, Year 1 by Summer

Welcome to Show #34!

There’s no Jeffrey this week, so Tim and Summer jump full force into discussion about Season 2, and all the changes heralded by the arrival of Captain John Sheridan in “Points of Departure”.

We talk about Sheridan, his charisma, his tactical sense, and the effects of his arrival on all the station staff. We also begin to get a sense of Sheridan’s character by scratching the surface of his conspiracy theorist heart, his integrity and quick wits under pressure.

We also touch a bit on Minbari with human DNA, the plots within plots of the crew of the Trigati, a renengade Minbari warship, and the appearance of Lt. Warren Keffer as a semi-regular character, along with a little bit of Robert Rusler trivia (his birthday was the day we recorded this episode, 20 September).

We also argue a bit about who knows what when, and if new incoming Grey Council members learn all the council secrets when they join or not.

Welcome to Show #33!

Interview: John Copeland, producer for Babylon 5

Continuing with our talk with John Copeland, we get his impressions on production costs then and now, we find out about his fascination and appreciation of The Flying Tigers and aviator history, and much more. And how many producers do you know that have their own trading cards and action figures?

Listener Feedback: Tim sometimes doesn’t pay attention. This is what happens when he doodles too much. We have voicemails about why Talia had to do the mind scan in “The Quality of Mercy”, bringing up the question of nature vs nurture; a message about statute of limitations for punishment; Steve in Denver comments on Tim’s viewpoint on the Vorlons; Joe from Michigan comments on the alleged time paradox in “Babylon Squared”; Jonathan in California comments again on whether the Vorlons adhered to Valen’s prophecies or not. We also go through a handful of emails… and we’re still not caught up on your feedback!

Podcast recording update

Posted 2006-09-13 10:29 am in General by Summer

This is for all of the fans who joined us in listening to us record live last week… you all heard the John Copeland interview in it’s unedited glory, and for those European fans who stayed up way past their bedtimes, or got up extra early to listen in, we thank you. It means a lot that you like what we’re doing enough to sacrifice a few hours of sleep in the middle of the week.

Just a heads-up for tonight: we won’t be recording a show tonight so you won’t have to make plans to stay up late. Tim’s work has him traveling and finding a time to record is problematic this week.

I may pop into the chatroom later this evening, but for those hoping to hear a live stream of the show, check back next Wednesday!

Babylon Podcast: Show #32

Welcome to Show #32!

Interview: John Copeland, producer for Babylon 5

After a little bit of Dragon*Con recap discussion, Tim, Summer and Jeffrey have an engaging and entertaining talk with B5 producer John Copeland.

We find out how B5 grew, in terms of the show finding its feet and finding its fans, how those fans were able to give instant feedback on the show back to the creators, and how those fans found each other and grew into a unified force that’s still alive and vibrant today.

We also talk about how B5 was treated much like an orphaned project by the suits, the work involved in producing and directing such a richly conceived show, the impact of winning Hugos, and much, much more.

Don’t miss Part 2 of this interview next week!

Babylon Podcast: Show #31

Posted 2006-09-06 12:35 am in Shows, Year 1 by Summer

Welcome to Show #31!

Tim and Summer focus this entire show on the Season 1 finale, “Chrysalis”. Given the many depths in this episode, that much time and more is needed.

Here there be deep geeking about various subplots coming together, the payoffs of earlier hints, and the setup of a few more mysteries yet to come.

What did Delenn ask Kosh? How much was she going to reveal to Sinclair if he’d been in time to talk to her? How much does Lennier know about what happened and why she’s going forward with her plans, and what are his true feelings towards her by now? Was there an intern with SuperGlue on standby during Season 1 as the device was being built?

Was the lurker who told Garibaldi about Petrov’s last job a telepath who could tell Garibaldi more than Petrov really told him? Was shooting Garibaldi a last ditch effort to keep the conspiracy quiet, or was he an intended target all along? Was Devereaux’s mission a one-way mission, or was his death only necessary after they were forced to try to kill Garibaldi?

Those questions and more are addressed, but as always, the more questions we answer, the more questions we come up with.

Dragon*Con

Posted 2006-09-02 7:15 am in News by Summer

I’m in Atlanta this weekend for Dragon*Con, and I met a few Babylon 5 regulars Friday.

I introduced myself to Julie Caitlin-Brown, who is just as funny and feisty in person as she is on the phone, and to Stephen Furst, who eventually did remember what I was talking about.

Mira Furlan was ethereal and charming, but I didn’t get back to Peter Jurasik, and Jason Carter wasn’t at his table while I was in there yesterday.

There’s a B5 Q&A session this afternoon, and I’m hoping to find the right people to ask to allow me to record it.
