Welcome to Show #241!

Tim talks about Shuttle Endeavour’s safe and final landing, and the preparations for Shuttle Atlantis’ final launch, which will be the final space shuttle launch. When will we walk amongst the stars again?

Interview: Tim, Summer and Bret chat with Peter David and Kathleen David, with Peter telling us about how he got into writing episodes for the show (“Soul Mates”, “There All the Honor Lies”, “Crusade: Ruling From the Tomb”), how he needed to divert from “writing for Star Trek” in order to get the Babylon 5 feel correct in the episodes and the novels, finding character voices, and more.

Kathleen talks a little about logistics behind getting the Del Rey B5 novels published, from author selection to publishing schedule and more.

And there’s stuff people STILL can’t talk about, even after all this time.

Check out Crazy 8 Press, the indie publishing group Peter’s helped start: crazy8press.com

Lurker’s Guide 2.0: Summer is expanding the documentation to be covered at Lurker’s Guide 2.0, the major change being converting the episode guide into a full Wiki with cross-referenced topics, tidbits and everything you’d want in a Wiki. She’s also still searching for pictures of rare collectibles, photos of magazine covers and toys, and all sorts of other B5 goodies that didn’t get included in the original guide during the years after Crusade. Let her know if you want to lend a hand.

More Parody/Filk Songs Wanted: If you know of any more B5-related fan songs out there, definitely let us know, so we can let other B5 fans know where to buy them! And if those CDs are out of print, let’s brainstorm on ways to get those songs back out there for fans!

I should add Pat is such a nice person, and I only learned of her work other than on B5 a few months ago, such as her stunt work and appearances on SNG.

I had honestly never known of Peter David before, showing how much I really do not know about such renown writers, and his review was extremely interesting to me as well.

    Leslie, I gather you’re a first-time listener. Welcome!

Peter David has primarily worked on the Star Trek franchise, and as he admits in the interview, he had to learn to think unTrek in order to write Babylon 5. There is a famous anecdote regarding his B5 script “There All Honor Lies”. In it, Ivanova protests the opening of a souvenir shop on the station, saying, “We’re not some deep space franchise! This place means something!” Peter David was certain the line would be cut, but JMS insisted it stay.

“We’re not some deep space franchise! This place means something!” So that was due to Peter’s nerve in submitting it — excellent. It’s one of my favorite lines, along with “Be somewhere else.”

    Cheers!

my other favorite line: “Good luck, Captain. Looks like you’re boldly going where everyone has gone before.”

I think something got mangled on this interview. I tried to listen on-line, but just got mangled audio then downloaded it and got the same issue any point I listened to it. You might want to check it out guys.

Aron: The audio sounds OK to me. It’s better for the interviewers than it is for the Peter and Kathleen David, but I can still understand everything they say as well.
