Welcome to Show #268!

Tim is back and Gary joins us this week, to talk about the news coming out of San Diego Comic-Con about the new JMS Studios and the projects it will be undertaking in the future, including his comics line, some new web series projects, and the new TV series about Vlad Dracula, done with Sam Raimi for Starz. Gary also mentions Bruce Boxleitner’s new TV series project, “Lantern City”, a Western-Steampunk adventure series still in development.

Deep Geeking: And so it begins… the last leg of the Babylon Podcast journey starts with us talking about one of the rarest books in the Babylon 5 realm, and a very interesting collection of thoughts, opinions and examinations about the the show we all love. Who knew that “Fasten, Zip or Zip, Fasten?” was really a metaphor for the paradox of time travel?

We also talk about how many essays that were presented at the conference that weren’t published in this collection, and Summer’s new obsession quite well be to contact the academics who wrote those and find out if it’s possible to get those papers online.

Isn’t if funny how even in academic discussions about Babylon 5, someone still manages to mention E. E. “Doc” Smith and the Lensman series?

You can read more about this collection at the SF Foundation’s website:

Lurker’s Guide 2.0: Summer is expanding the documentation to be covered at Lurker’s Guide 2.0, the major change being converting the episode guide into a full Wiki with cross-referenced topics, tidbits and everything you’d want in a Wiki. She’s also still searching for pictures of rare collectibles, photos of magazine covers and toys, and all sorts of other B5 goodies that didn’t get included in the original guide during the years after Crusade. Let her know if you want to lend a hand.

More Parody/Filk Songs Wanted: If you know of any more B5-related fan songs out there, definitely let us know, so we can let other B5 fans know where to buy them! And if those CDs are out of print, let’s brainstorm on ways to get those songs back out there for fans!

On Summers comments on Buffy academia. There is a Whedon studies association and actually several-day conferences about every other or third year on Whedon-related themes still going on, mostly in the US though. There is even an academic journal, the Slayage: The Journal of The Whedon Studies Association.

On the subject of the balance of three, it is linked somewhat to the need for allegiances. The Narn’s & Centauri’s fates are bound together if they are the only two sides involved. But the external influence of B5/the ISA pulls them both in a different direction.

So for those of us who don’t have the book, would it be possible for you to give us a brief synopsis of exactly HOW “fasten, zip” is a metaphor for time travel paradoxes? I’m just not seeing it on my own here…

I am behind in listening to the final podcasts. I can’t believe y’all are done and gone forever!

I am with Summer on the not cracking the spines of books! This and so many other reasons are why I do not lend out my books in the first place. I’d rather just give it to someone and buy myself a new one. I cannot stand to have pages bent, the spine cracked, stains, etc.
